1999 – SILVERTONE

14. Innocent Man / Mannish Boy / Backdoor Man

The first thing that you need to know about this compilation album is this: the career of Buddy Guy goes all the way back to the 1950’s, and includes a period of time when he was the central figure of the blues revival of the 1960’s. This compilation fails to mention that…so in that way, it’s more than a bit misleading. With that said, Buddy’s Baddest actually covers this blues legend’s first of two decades with Silvertone Records, from 1991 through 1998. For Buddy Guy, this was a huge decade. 1991’s Damn Right, I’ve Got The Blues came after ten years of silence, the recording of which was encouraged and helped along by Eric Clapton, Jeff beck and Mark Knopfler, and became the first of three consecutive Grammy winners for Best Blues Album.

And for good reason. This best of culls from his four 90’s albums with Silvertone, and showcases Guy simply smoking on the guitar. If you love the blues, then this is a must have. This features “Damn Right”, a fine version of “Mustang Sally” with Jeff Beck, “Midnight Train” with Jonny Lang, and many more tracks that feature Guy simply burning on the guitar. Remember…this guy played Woodstock, and inspired most of your guitar heroes from the sixties and seventies. And here, even later in his career, and after an extended hiatus…he does not disappoint. Buddy Guy is simply one of the greatest, and quite possibly the most solid bridge between traditional blues and the blues side of rock. Which makes this, and him, simply vital. Long live Buddy Guy!

1999 – FOREVER GOLD
No Production Credit

1. Ain’t Nobody’s Business
2. It’s Easy To Remember
3. My Man
4. No Detour Ahead
5. Lover Man
6. Crazy He Calls Me
7. Nice Work If You Can Get It
8. What A Little Moonlight Can Do
9. He’s Funny That Way
10. When Your Lover Has Gone
11. Don’t Explain
12. I Got It Bad And It Ain’t Good
13. Night And Day
14. God Bless The Child

So many compilations that seem to have come from nowhere. This is one of those. Forever Gold was a subsidiary of St. Clair Entertainment from Canada that appears to have been in business between 1999 and 2007. St. Clair’s last releases were a year later. Part of the Forever Gold label was a long series of compilations with the same name. Billie Holiday had one of these come out in 1999. They are discount releases, and because of St. Clair’s history, the possibility of copyright violations is possible with the label. Outside of this, there is very little information available about this album. There are no liner notes, so no production or musician credits. All you get is a single photo and a 14 song tracklist…and of course, you get some pretty fine music.

One of the more interesting tracks is Holiday’s 1937 version of “My Man” (originally “Mon Homme”), in which Holiday literally sings matter about how her man beats her, but she still loves him. The recordings on Forever Gold seem to have a strange echo which makes them sound even older than they are. Of course, there are dozens of different Holiday compilations out there, and she recorded so much great music, that it’s hard to go wrong with her. So, I guess it comes down to how much you want. 14 songs is a bit light…you can get albums that are much more complete. And not having any liner notes of any kind is a minus as well. The music here? It's all golden. Your mileage may vary depending on how much information you want to go along with it.

Since the mid 1960’s, Eric Clapton has been there. He was a Bluesbreaker and a Yardbird, he was God with Cream. He was part of Blind Faith, and he was Derek of The Dominos. He then went solo and became, too much of the time, the second coming of the snoozy side (is there another?) of JJ Cale. But through it all, Clapton has carried the mantle for the great bluesmen of the past, and he has carried it with dignity. Blues is a two disc compilation that covers Clapton’s blues highlights during the decade of the 70’s, with the first disc being studio recordings and the second disc consisting of live recordings. The idea is sound, the liner notes exceptional, and the playing is, of course, as professional as it gets. There are some real gems here…”Mean Old World” is a Dominos outtake previously only available on the Duane Allman anthology, and it’s great. The studio side houses outtakes from Slowhand, Backless, and 461 Ocean Boulevard that are well worth while, as well as album tracks from the 70’s that are well chosen.

The live side begins with a smoking version of Stormy Monday featuring Marcy Levy. The rest of the live tracks are all from albums, except for the fine closer “Further On Up The Road”, a previously unreleased track. The only downside to Blues is that there are some duplicated tracks (“Early In The Morning” and “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” are on both discs…surely there were other tracks that could have fit nicely?), and the fact that “Wonderful Tonight”, while a Clapton highlight, doesn’t really fit here at all. Plus, after two discs, you’ve pretty much gotten his whole bag of tricks more than once. Blues is not one of the better known compilations for Clapton, but it is one of the more interesting ones out there. Definitely a good addition if you’re a fan of his 70’s work, which may have been his strongest decade anyway.
