1999-VIRGIN
Produced By GOMEZ
1. Hangover
2. Revolutionary Kind
3. Bring It On
4. Blue Moon Rising
5. Las Vegas Dealer
6. We Haven't Turned Around
7. Fill My Cup
8. Rhythm & Blues Alibi
9. Rosalita
10. California
11. Devil Will Ride
Will someone please tell me why America didn't love this? The 2nd album from Gomez was a hit just about everywhere in the world except for the US. It's loaded with great hooks, from "Hangover" and "Bring It On" to "Rhythm & Blues Alibi" and "Fill My Cup". I remember sitting in traffic on the 405 listening to this thinking, "Why?". Great songs, great vocals, and they make it sound easy. Gomez should be one of the biggest bands today, but they're not. Which, I guess is okay because it's still cool to like them. 1999 – CONCRETE
Produced By RICHARD FEARLESS & TIM HOLMES
1. Dirge
2. Soul Auctioneer
3. Death Threat
4. Flying
5. Aisha
6. Lever Street
7. Aladdin’s Story
8. Broken Little Sister
9. Neptune City
Death In Vegas began in 1994 as Dead Elvis. They are a British electronic group that also includes elements of shoegaze, trip hop and psychedelic music in what they do, which makes them more than interesting. The Contino Sessions is their second album, and you’ll find it to be their best work. On this record, they include more live instruments, expand their sound to be more rock oriented, and add an interesting list of guest vocalists. This is a band that is bent on not just improving, but also holding your interest as a listener. It’s not clear who or what Contino is, but in the end, it really doesn’t matter, I guess. What matters is that this is a pretty cool album that warrants repeated listens. And that is a very good thing. I think you may like this one quite a bit.
The Contino Sessions is about half instrumental. And those instrumentals are strong. The ones with vocals…Iggy Pop wrote the lyrics for and sang “Aisha”, not surprisingly the most popular track here. Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie did the same on “Soul Auctioneer”, as did Jim Reid of The Jesus And Mary Chain on “Broken Little Sister”. Also interesting is “Aladdin’s Story”, with music reportedly written but never published by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards. Also, the opener “Dirge” is a really fine trip hop song. The band’s leaders, Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes, do a fine job of keeping things focused and fun. Death In Vegas has released six albums to date, but nothing in the last eight years (2016’s Transmission). The Contino Sessions is still their best work, and worth hearing. Since the mid 1960’s, Eric Clapton has been there. He was a Bluesbreaker and a Yardbird, he was God with Cream. He was part of Blind Faith, and he was Derek of The Dominos. He then went solo and became, too much of the time, the second coming of the snoozy side (is there another?) of JJ Cale. But through it all, Clapton has carried the mantle for the great bluesmen of the past, and he has carried it with dignity. Blues is a two disc compilation that covers Clapton’s blues highlights during the decade of the 70’s, with the first disc being studio recordings and the second disc consisting of live recordings. The idea is sound, the liner notes exceptional, and the playing is, of course, as professional as it gets. There are some real gems here…”Mean Old World” is a Dominos outtake previously only available on the Duane Allman anthology, and it’s great. The studio side houses outtakes from Slowhand, Backless, and 461 Ocean Boulevard that are well worth while, as well as album tracks from the 70’s that are well chosen.
The live side begins with a smoking version of Stormy Monday featuring Marcy Levy. The rest of the live tracks are all from albums, except for the fine closer “Further On Up The Road”, a previously unreleased track. The only downside to Blues is that there are some duplicated tracks (“Early In The Morning” and “Have You Ever Loved A Woman” are on both discs…surely there were other tracks that could have fit nicely?), and the fact that “Wonderful Tonight”, while a Clapton highlight, doesn’t really fit here at all. Plus, after two discs, you’ve pretty much gotten his whole bag of tricks more than once. Blues is not one of the better known compilations for Clapton, but it is one of the more interesting ones out there. Definitely a good addition if you’re a fan of his 70’s work, which may have been his strongest decade anyway. [First added to this chart: 09/04/2013]
