To try a comment on a Bob Dylan album without at least being English mothertongue is something like a crime, so I'll try to be as generic as possible. I felt in love with the album at first for "Love Minus Zero" and then for the fantastic dicotomy between "Subterranean Homesick Blues"/"Maggie's farm" and "Mr. Tambourine Man"/"It's all over now baby blue". And then when you listen to anything like "It's all right ma", words will never be enough. Just listen ! [First added to this chart: 04/30/2012]

The right songs at the right time: if I were 20th in the sixties "my Nevermind" would have probably been "Help" or "Sgt. Pepper" while in the 70s "Never mind the bulloks". In the 90s, unless not necessarily THE BEST, it was the perfect album. Quick, powerful, depressed, intense, commercial, deep songs perfect for a drunk night drive surrounded by the city lights or a star lighted sky. It recalls the perfumes of being young, it smells like teen spirit ! [First added to this chart: 04/30/2012]

Bruce is not one of those guys whose main gift is synthesis (you might try one of his gigs to confirm). Whereas a number of pearls are spread around bootlegs, special editions, b-sides etc., his albums not necessarily include all the best tracks of the period (e.g. "Born to run"), while in other cases they honestly include too much (e.g. "The River"). "Darkness" instead is a well balanced collection of consistent and beautiful songs, powerful and dark classics, from "Badlands" to "Candy's room", from "The Promised Land" to "Prove it all night", to the fantastic title track. I bought this album while travelling with my wife and at the time one year old daughter through California. DMB is not well known where I come from, but there are some very big fans, like everywhere. The guitarist of our little band was one of those and opened this new world to me. At first I felt in love with "Typical Situation" and later on discovered the rest: the funky "What would you say", the magic "Satellite", the epic "Ants Marching" and the powerful "Jimi Thing" are some of the best songs ever, really ! In terms of composition DM can be compared to the Beatles, in terms of performance to Zeppelin and Dire Straits. All in a 1990 context. Number one !!! [First added to this chart: 05/02/2012]
