From the strident cries of "How long must we sing this song?" in the opening masterpiece Sunday Bloody Sunday to the mournful cries of "How long to sing this song?" in the closing hymn "40", this album captivates me.

The last album the Beatles recorded together and their best. They put everything they had left as a group into it.

No one could write melodies like Tom Petty. Even his later albums show his pure songwriting genius. While "The Waiting" from Hard Promises is the best song he wrote, Damn the Torpedoes is top-to-bottom his best album. The unknown, moody "You Tell Me" is better than most #1 tracks on other groups' albums.

I will never understand why this album is largely ignored in the U.S. An incredible batch of tunes from start to finish. In the Crowd and Fly are standouts, as is the album-ending absolute gem, Down in the Tube Station at Midnight.

I saw R.E.M. perform "Radio Free Europe" on Late Night with David Letterman, bought the album the next day, and have loved its perfectly-crafted, jangly melodies ever since.

Matlock's songwriting, Lydon's lyric writing, Jones' guitar/bass playing ... all underrated. The album and its ferocity hold up well.

A mash up of many genres with a smooth sound, inspirational lyrics, and a phenomenal title track. Along with fellow Christian rockers Jars of Clay, dc Talk proved in 1995 that Christian rockers could be as "alternative" as any secular artist.

There are few songwriters who have as clever a way with words as Jimmer Podrasky. All three of the Rave-Ups albums and both of Jimmer's solo albums feature extremely well-written phrases and this album, Chance, is the all-around best, both musically and lyrically.
