Top 100 Greatest Music Albums
by Helios

Hi, welcome to my chart!
To rate the albums I listen I use the next math operation:

"Total tracks of the album" minus "tracks I like" divided by "Total tracks of the album" and the result multiplied by 100

This give me a % which I will use to put the album inside of the next ranges:

100|All the songs are good
95|Just 1 song it's bad
90|[15-29%]
85|[30-39%]
80|[40-49%]
75|[50-59%]
70|[60-75%]
65|[76-and low]

[Example: [1991] Queen - Innuendo
A total of 12 songs and I like 9.
12-9=3/12=0.25*100=[25%]
[25%] it's inside the [15-29%] range, so I should rate it "90"]

Exeptions: 2-long-tracks albums (Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells), short songs (The Gerogerigegege - Tokyo Anal Dynamite) and nearly empty tracks (Sly & The Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On). Compilations gets a +15 and Lives gets +5 (to be fair because some of those are full of good tracks).
And yes, this is a subjetive chart.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -
The real life it's consuming my listening time, so re-doing all lists it's always a challenge.
I hope you can enjoy some of my pick-ups and if you find some grammal errors, sorry.
Thanks for your ratings and comments!

It started out as a Virus project to relax, but due to the imminent death of vocalist Federico Moura, the entire album changed its jovial aura for a rather dark and even oppressive in some tracks. That contrast is noticeable in the changes between some tracks.
Personally, it's an album that has accompanied my entire life, filling it with a lot of emotions and memories.

The bossa nova genre, unlike the rest of the world, enjoyed great popularity in South America for a lot of years. I even have childhood memories where specials by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto or Astrud Gilberto were played on the radio. It was a surprise to find this excellent mix between Sinatra and Jobim. Oh, and I'm talking about the original 1964 version, not the 2010 version.
Listening to this album relaxes me, and it gives me the desire to sing again.

Spinetta was a poet, creator of many memorable bands and songs, so it was no surprise to find an album that shows shades of the past (Almendra) and the future (Invisible). [First added to this chart: 10/01/2014]

The first time I heard the album I didn't like it very much. After some time and while I was lying on my back in my bed, the album plays in my random list and, as the afternoon progressed and night began to arrive, the album somehow musicalized this event, ending when the place was completely dark. Somehow I went from sadness to peace. [First added to this chart: 06/19/2014]

I don't remember exactly how I came to see the Mykonos video, but after that I looked for this band called Fleet Foxes, which inevitably led me to find this album, which, as I read somewhere, makes you let your hair grow and the beard and go for a walk in the forest. This album is almost a therapy to escape the city and return to the roots. [First added to this chart: 07/13/2024]

I'm not a big fan of live albums, so upon reading that this was one of the best live performances out there, I was hesitant. By listening to the "1001 albums you must hear before you die" in order, I came to this album and it blew my mind, I could imagine what the stage, the band, the audience was like and how they all interacted. This album encouraged me to give live albums a chance, managing to find many hidden gems, but this one it still the best of all.
Oh, and it was after listening several times that my brain made the connection between this album and The Residents' album "George & James"... yeah...

Another great discovery thanks to the 1001. This led me to listen more and more of Todd Rundgren. Spacey, Dalilian and very experimental, just the way I like it! [First added to this chart: 11/04/2015]

One of the few albums that brings me back bad memories, but necessary ones to survive. When I rediscovered this album and researched the background, I was somewhat relieved as the negative memories were somehow dampened.
Long live the memory of Ian.

When I heard this album for the first time I was like "wtf, this is New Order? How did they get there?" (I listened to the discography in order). It was then that I realized that all the previous albums slowly showed a change in sound, but only when "Fine Time" started playing did I notice that change. Enjoyable from start to finish and one of the few albums that I recommend to everyone I talk about music. [First added to this chart: 11/04/2015]

As with many other bands, I listened to Gary Numan's discography from start to finish. I got more and more bored from Dance onwards, listening to each album worse than the previous one, even taking breaks between albums. After Machine + Soul (a guilty pleasure nowadays) my ears couldn't take it anymore, but before I retired to do other things, I decided to play one more album that night. So, Sacrifice started playing and for a moment I even thought I had put on the wrong album or the tracks were wrongly labeled, but no, it was Gary Numan. Even if they sound like demos, even if the same sample is used a lot or there are tracks that sounds like came out of Machine + Soul, IS Gary Numan!.
The whole background behind the album made it become an almost immediate favorite, and after listening to Exile and Pure, this album is definitely a representation that you can always start over to the times when you enjoy life. The dark phoenix rose from the ashes! (and from the sample of Vangelis' track from Bitter Moon "The Dance Of The Sensualities")

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.7/100, a mean average of 83.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.9/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 19.0.

Really nice and diverse chart. Tons of interesting picks on here. Music from the Penguin Café is a really special album. I also love the later Johnny Cash albums and American IV is my favorite.

I really dig the synth pop picks, and love to see some love for James Brown. I’m looking forward to exploring the rest.

What a unique and diverse chart! Though I'm not personally a huge believer in rating albums by aggregating their track scores (I often find myself loving certain tracks within the context of an album, but without their surroundings more difficult to enjoy) I'm hugely impressed with the diverse nationalities present. Well done!!
