12. (11) 1
1996-CAMDEN
Produced By FAIRGROUND ATTRACTION & KEVIN MOLONEY
1. Perfect
2. Find My Love
3. Fairground Attraction
4. A Smile In A Whisper
5. Clare
6. Walkin’ After Midnight
7. Do You Want To Know A Secret?
8. Allelujah
9. The Moon Is Mine
10. Watching The Party
11. Winter Rose
12. The Wind Knows My Name
13. Jock O’Hazeldean
14. Comedy Waltz
15. You Send Me
16. Ay Fond Kiss
Not to be confused with Fairport Convention. This British band came together in 1987, had a huge hit with “Perfect”, released one hit album, then broke up in a cloud of fighting while recording a second album in 1990, never to be heard from again. This collection contains nine of the twelve tracks from their album The First Of A Million Kisses, with the rest being either from their posthumous release Ay Fond Kiss or B sides. Their short career is very highly regarded, and singer Eddi Reader has gone on to solo success.
At first, it’s hard to see what the fuss was all about. Fairground’s brand of British swing and skiffle takes some getting used to, but once you get it, you’ll find that most of what’s here is pretty damn beautiful. Reader possesses a sweet, powerful voice, and the material suits her well. This is not going to rock you, but songs like “Perfect”, a nice cover of The Beatles’ “Do You Want To Know A Secret”, and the lovely “Jock O’Hazeldean” work nicely. Reader is a great singer, and this may be the best way to hear her. This album has grown on me over the years a lot…which is why I never throw anything away. [First added to this chart: 10/19/2025]

2000-VIRGIN
Various Producers
1. Shitbag 9
2. Bring Your Lovin' Back Here
3. Emergency Surgery
4. Hit On The Head
5. Flavors
6. 78 Stone Shuffle
7. We Haven't Turned Around (X-Ray)
8. Buena Vista
9. Shitbag
10. Steve McCroski
11. Wharf Me
12. High On Liquid Skin
13. Rosemary
14. The Cowboy Song
15. Getting Better
Odd that after only two albums, Gomez would already be releasing a collection of outtakes. So, while much of this collection is pretty unnecessary, there are moments...in particular, the song that first turned me on to Gomez ...the excellent "Buena Vista". The track is obviously the centerpiece here, and it's nine minutes of why Gomez is an awesome band.
There are other gems here as well, but about half of this could have stayed unreleased and no one (except for their hard core fans) would have known any better. The version of The Beatles' "Getting Better:" is nice, and there are alternate versions of better known tracks. Basically, this is an album of bonus tracks.
On the plus side, it came with the very early Machismo EP as a second disc, which is excellent. [First added to this chart: 03/26/2025]

1988-BEGGARS BANQUET
Produced By IAN BROUDIE & MARK E SMITH
1. New Big Prinz
2. Overture From “I Am Curious, Orange”
3. Dog Is Life/Jerusalem
4. Kurious Oranj
5. Wrong Place, Right Time
6. Guide Me Soft
7. C.D. Win Fall 2088 AD
8. Yes O Yes
9. Van Plague?
10. Bad News Girl
11. Cab It Up!
12. Last Nacht
13. Big New Priest
No one will blame you if you find The Fall difficult to listen to: many people do. Despite the fact that lead vocalist Mark E. Smith is maybe the worst singer in rock, the band has persevered through at least 30 studio albums. I Am Kurious Oranj is actually a soundtrack to a ballet called “I Am Curious, Orange” recorded in 1988. The album contains several high points for the band: guitarist Brix E. Smith (then married to Mark E. Smith, divorced a year later) brought a sense of melody to The Fall that they rarely have ever had. So tracks like “New Big Prinz” and “Kurious Oranj” are much more accessible than a lot of the band’s output.
Also of interest is a reworking of William Blake’s “Jerusalem”, and, as usual, a feeling of experimentation that makes most of what this band does interesting. I Am Kurious Oranj is one of The Fall’s more listenable efforts, and about as good as they have ever been, although Smith’s voice becomes more grating as you go. This band is not for those looking for pop music, that’s for sure. [First added to this chart: 03/14/2025]
