Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I've already given this chart a rating but since it's chart of the day I'll leave a comment. Really, really great chart (as the score suggested) with a variety of genres. Would be great if you headed it with a little description (and maybe some notes for your AOTYs?) Keep it up!!

Outstanding 2010s chart! I love Reflektor and Helplessness Blues, and I'm happy to see A Moon Shaped Pool already in your top ten. I haven't listened to it quite enough yet to form a definite opinion, but I'm confident it will make its way into my 2016 year chart soon, and probably my 2010s decade chart as well.

Great chart. Lots in common with mine. Nice to see the National up at the top where they belong. Can't share your enthusiasm for Kanye or Bon Iver but can't argue with the Suburbs at top. I think Reflektor is over rated on this site though. Cheers.
