This is an "alt-country" album of unrequited love and love lost. It's both full in the firm grip of love and being choked by it. The highlights of love's anguish come on "oh my sweet carolina", "come pick me up" and . On "oh my sweet carolina", with backing vocals from emmylou harris, ryan is a lost stray in the big city without his love singing "I was trying to find me something / But I wasn't sure just what / Man I ended up with pockets full of dust ". In "come pick me up", ryan is love sick and love vexed, unfurling his venom in the chorus: "Come pick me up / Take me out / F*ck me up / Steal my records / Screw all my friends / They're all full of shit / With a smile on your face / And then do it again / I wish you would ". Or on "don't ask for the water", where a woman caused him to "hate this old place / And what it represents / And I hate who I was / And who I ended up since / But if you learned how to swim in case you'd drowned / Don't ask her for the water / Cause she'll swallow you down ". "shakedown on 9th street" is like a well-placed joke in the dearth of a heart-wrenching drama, a welcome respite about a dust-up over a woman. But that and "to be young (to be sad)" are really the only foot-stompers. This offering is truly for the heartbroken and the weight will fill you up the most when you're feeling your worst. heartbreaker's less about the words to describe love's impact than the feeling, like the quiet-yet-heavy piano in closer "sweet lil gal (23rd/1st)" as he sings a sentiment at the heart of the album -- "when you're lonely, she makes you feel nice"."  [+]  Reply

"This album came at a point where I was completely exhaused with Wu-Tang. I really felt like their quality had dipped quite a bit (and for the most part it HAD -- there was a lot of cash grabbing at this time) so it was hard for me to give SC a fair shake. Now that time has passed, it's clear that this is not only one of the best WU albums created, but it belongs in the upper echelon of all rap albums. Ghostface has a ear for samples that has yet to be topped, not only in the songs but in the skits/filler. It really reminds me of some of DOOMs best work (which is probably why they work so well together.) My favorite songs on here include Nutmeg, One, Apollo Kids, Stay True, and Malcolm. The album is beautifully crafted and feels like one complete cohesive package that effortlessly flows while it takes you on a brilliant journey. The instrumentation then adds depth to the sound to back this up so that in the quieter and more serene moments we are still entertained. The guitar is brilliant on this record and the added effects we get make the music feel otherworldly. Also, I am a huge fan of the production which brings the soundscape to life and makes the music sound so fresh and new even 20 years later. However, the record is just too long in my opinion and it is overly drawn out. Each song could be cut down by 5 minutes or maybe more as there isn't a lot going on at times. Furthermore, I think the music can sound a little bare and it could do with either more instruments or more exciting instrumentation just to make it a little more vibrant to keep us entertained for the elongated 70 minutes. Overall, there is genius music on this release but it gets lost and confused on the way making for a not that enjoyable experience for us. "  [+]  Reply

I also read that later on these guys release their best albums, so there are 2 options about their discography: 1: It is absolutely INCREDIBLE and the first album is only the beggining of the awesomeness OR 2: Their debut is really underrated and their most acclaimed albums (Strawberry Jam, Merriweather Post Pavillion) are just as good"  [+]  Reply
