This is rap's Sex Pistols moment. Rap was getting stale, trapped in the overproduced cliched shit of the late 90s. How many artists followed the rags to riches/drugs/parties/hos and bitches/outsmart cops/guns/bling formula? Eminem was a breath of fresh air. A strong lyricist with underrated flow, he took rap in a snarky new direction. He also benefited from Dre's best work.

Despite this, like the Sex Pistols, the influence and impact of this music overshadows the fact that it's actually quite average. Eminem's best work came later.

Beginning of three masterpieces Eminem would drop between 1999-2003. Sadly, it's all been waaaaaaay down hill ever since Encore.

The Slim Shady LP BEA Ranked 498 Overall as per February 2018

Rap just aint my thing but as part of my odyssey to listen to the BEA top 500 twice it was a bridge I had to cross , and cross that bridge I did TWICE.

It just so happened that I checked out Eminem' Marshell Mathers Album only a few weeks ago just for the hell of it so I had this as a reference point. I guess if you put a gun to my head I'd have to say I enjoyed this one more , The Mathers LP was purile in many parts .

This album unfortunately contains too many MOTHER referances for my liking ( as did The Mathers LP come to think of it ) which all felt too creepy and weird IMO. Theres no one killer track either (MM LP had Kim for example) , my favorite was 'Bonnie And Clyde' which includes a very cute Eminems daughter on a VERY dark track.

Oh and the "skits" are down right god damn awful !!!. They are completely childish and downright embarrassing , they are something a 13yo would find humerous. How they were allowed to be included is completely beyond me.

Gets a lot of love because of its shock value and Eminem bursting on the scene. A white rapper that could actually flow and rhyme with skill brought everybody together to name him rap king.

The fact is this is pretty silly goofy stuff. What he writes about is trivial and his vocal delivery throughout has this high whiny quality he eventually leaves behind in subsequent releases.

Can't deny what he can rhyme and how he times the delivery. But the topics are so stupid here that it can only really be labeled as a fun party album. It just doesn't go as deep enough as better rap albums regardless of skin color

Without a doubt an iconic album. Loved it when I was getting interested in rap. The humor is great and pushes boundaries unlike many. Some may say he's got stupid lyrics but personally he's a great storyteller. These songs really tell stories unlike many rappers and uses humor to do so. If you look past that to, you see a dark side of him and his story.
