I didn't fall in love with Odyssey right away, but it did haunt and challenge me. There was something about Emily Mure's songs that made me want to go off into a quiet place and make sure I savored every note, since the album is obviously crafted with a great deal of subtlety and intention. Some of it reminds me of the Jayhawks, in that when my brain expects the melody to go up the scale, it goes down. When I think it's time for a minor chord transition, she shifts to a major key. When I expect a rhyme, I get a shift in tone and direction. The niche Emily Mure occupies within the world of chamber folk reminds me at times of Espers and Meg Baird, but sometimes I find myself surprised by the appearance of a pedal steel, an oboe, a cello. The surprises lurking around every corner are what make Odyssey, in its best moments, so rewarding.
