Originals Volume Seven (compilation album)

In this, the seventh outing for Claremont 56's Originals series, we see the usual eclectic mix of genres pulled together - electrofunk, breakbeat, sound collage, ambient techno and leftfield dub to name but a few. It can be the case for albums such as this that the diverse nature of the styles visited leaves the listener feeling disjointed and, ultimately, unsatisfied. The tracks chosen here, however, do not have this effect. They are cleverly sequenced so that each one segues nicely from the previous one, giving a coherent listening experience from start to finish. The only misstep here is, in my opinion, the Big Boys track, which fits with the overall aesthetic of the album, but isn't as strong a piece as the rest. Nevertheless, a strong compilation.
