21st Century Songwriters
by meccalecca

A rushed response to Mercury and Norman Bates' 21st century songwriter charts. There will be more to come. There's way too few women right now. But i don't have time.

There's some bands here, but I think they're all very heavily dependent on songwriting instead of sound. stripped down to a songwriter and guitar, they'd still be amazing.

These are awesome! I Agree with Merc about Ritter.

Merc,

I like Josh Ritter. I first heard him years ago, but I've never familiarized myself enough with any of his records. It's been on my list of things to do. I could say the same about Micah P Hinson. pretty sure he was on one of your lists.

I don't think songwriter's should really be discounted for having a regular backing band. Like many of the "solo" artists have bands anyway. I've seen Jeff Tweedy do Wilco stuff solo, and those songs are amazing no matter what. That's the mark of a great songwriter.

I really like this! There's a bit more cross-over with my chart here than on Norman's.

You definitely did it a bit different in counting bands that were basically all written by one guy - like Wilco. And I was surprised by inclusion of Wye Oak. I didn't even think of them (probably due to my limiter on it). I have to listen to more Wye Oak, I really really like "Civilian". I haven't heard that album on your chart or "The Knot".

Anyway, cheers. We should all go for a drink sometime.

Edit: what's with both of y'all's charts being all odd numbers and shiiiiiit? Just asking. It's cool I guess.

Edit 2: can both of you please either 1. Check out Josh Ritter (the Animal Years or Hello Starling are both great) or 2. Explain what you think of him, why you didn't include him, etc...?

Peace.

Sparks are interesting. I really wouldn't consider songwriting their strength, but maybe.

I think The Golden Age is maybe as good as anything American Music Club has done. Mark Eitzel still releases solo albums too
