The Top 100 Greatest Post-Punk Albums by Secondsoul

Post-punk is my favourite genre probably cos I grew up with it as a kid at school in the late 70s/early 80s.Post-punk became the focus of the 80s indie and alternative music scene and has influenced so many artists even today. I will do a post-punk revival chart soon that will include bands like The Strokes and Interpol. This chart though will feature albums that were released between 1977 and 1985. I have limited this chart to a maximum of two albums per artist so as to give exposure to more of the great bands that graced this period. And apologies for not including The Smiths. Yes, some of their tracks were undoubtedly post-punk but their first two albums that were released during this period were for me more alternative rock or indie pop!

While many essential bands and records are represented, this chart privileges the polished, big sound, effect-heavy post-punk too much to my liking. Post-punk is maybe too encompassing a term to have meaningful discussions about, but I think the style emerged with bands like the Wire, Gang of Four, PIL, Pere Ubu and The Fall, which kept the distortion, dissonance and DIY quality of the punk rock sound and added all kinds of ideas and sonic explorations to that. I miss that side of post punk here.

I've been using your chart to find so many great albums I never heard of. Thanks so much! In particular The Chameleons and The Sound are now two of my favorite bands of all time.

Nice chart. That was one of my favorite eras in music. Hadn't heard Sad Lovers and Giants, March Violets - good stuff!

Thanks for your comment Kiki. I will check out Struggler, never heard of them to be honest with you. There are loads of obscure bands that I could have included on this list but I didn't because I wanted this list not to be a personal taste selection but more a definitive guide to what I consider to be the greatest and most influential post-punk bands/albums of that era. imo all of the most popular and well known post-punk acts happened to come from UK/US.
