You BEAutiful People! Top Recs From Other Members
by Jimmy Dread

i doubt I would have discovered any of these wonderful records without BEA. Bless up.

I get some lovely comments every now and then from people who have ended up discovering, listening to and loving a record I've featured, mentioned or name-dropped their way. Well, it's time to repay the kudos. Below is a list of albums discovered thanks to members on this site (naturally in order of preference), along with those amazing souls who put me in touch with it in the first place.

It's been a little dry for updates of late as I've been off on my own musical voyage away from the good ship BEA (plus plug.dj - previously the best source of finding out about some of these - seems to have bitten the dust), but since this chart was conceived and first compiled I've managed to pick up about 80-85 of these to expand the record collection. So thanks all for making my wallet a little lighter over the years, and here's to the next discovery (whenever that may be).... Jimmy, January 2021

Via Meccalecca. I'm sure I'd spotted this album in a P4k review a while back (assume it's been re-issued), but had never given it a listen until Mr. Leather dropped Blue Crystal Fire in plug one night. A total revelation which I can't believe had passed me by for so long. Now holds extra resonance after listening to it en route to the hospice just before my Mum passed away. Hauntingly beautiful. Via Nickvolos. Everyone's favourite Forever Changes fan probably has no idea that I hopped over to his chart to, ahem, 'nick' this, which sounds like a pissed-off West Coast version of Television. I think MSS may have mentioned the Wipers in passing once, but Is This Real? never clicked. This does. Massively. [First added to this chart: 09/24/2014]

Via Norman Bates. One of the many discoveries I've made through stalking Norm's contributions to the 'What Album Are You Listening To' thread, and whilst I was aware of Willie before Norm dropped this bomb (mainly through his Blaxplotation era stuff - 'Brothers Gonna Work It Out', etc) this delicious slice of sumptuous soul had totally passed me by previously. Via Norman Bates. If you ever get stuck for an instant rec, plug.dj is a pretty decent place to go, especially when the likes of Norm, Satie, /0, Mec, Brandon and Lethal all turn up. This slice of gospel-funk merriment was one of Norm's drops on what became an impromptu Saturday funk hour. [First added to this chart: 10/24/2014]

Via Mancsoulsister. MSS she'll always be to me, with her love of Lux Interior and other such psychobilly gubbins. Picked up this LP on the cheap purely as she's always banged on about how much she's loved the Cramps. I can see the appeal. [First added to this chart: 01/19/2016]

Via Graeme2. Part of the Friday night 35+ pluggers posse, Graeme is a marvellous source for all sorts of electronic merriment, especially 80s electro, house and the like. Embarrassingly I had not listened to a Man Parrish track since I heard "Male Stripper" (Man 2 Man meets Man Parrish) which I taped off the Radio One chart countdown in the 80s. That was, until Graeme dropped "Man Made" from this self-titled effort. [First added to this chart: 07/02/2015]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 94.8/100, a mean average of 96.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 97.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.

Not sure if you were the first to come up with this idea but it doesn't matter; this chart is everything I love about the online music community summed up in 100 albums.

Yeah, that was probably me, as it seems I'm the only one to have mentioned it in more than a cursory way on the forums. Glad you liked it :)

A very nice surprise seeing your chart! You've given me lots of new artists to hear. Thank you for that. It's a great idea, as well, making a chart celebrating the friends on BEA that exposed you to the new music. Saved your chart as a Fave.
