Top 40 Greatest Music Albums

((This is really old and out of date I have a chart on RYM now: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/hungrycolorsurroundingme/judge_me__my_favourite_albums_f1/

That said I'm going to keep this exactly how it as, so it can act as a time capsule of 14 year old taste in music))

1 album per artist, until I have a larger chart. I will continue adding descriptions to albums. Albums that illicit a strong emotional response will be written about first.

No other piece of media has captured raw emotion as well as this album.
The album opens with Breadcrumb Trail, a dreamy math rock track, Brain McMahon whispery vocals paint a picture of a busy carnival were the protagonist befriends a fortune teller. The song's abrasive chorus mimics the ferocity of the roller coaster that McMahon's character and the fortune teller ride together. The song demonstrats teenage rebellion and flirting perfectly. This authentic portrayal of teenagehood is due to band being made up of teenagers and this is one of the key factors of why this album is so honest. Although Breadcrumb Trail accurately captures the interaction of a teenager the album only starts to show real emotion in the 3rd track.
Don, Aman starts with a seemingly meaning less lyric, Don stepped outside, although the way the lyric is delivered makes it one of the most memorable experiences of the whole album. The song spindles webs of dark acoustic strings, hushed vocals navigate through the maze of guitar, the effect is haunting. The vauge description of Don's struggle through a party, should be boring but the dramatic wording and delivery of the event makes it one of the most captivating musical tales ever to exist.
I could write extensively about the dreamlike Washer and the teenage anxiety powered Good Morning, Captain, but that would be spoiling one of the best albums ever created.

This album is the soundtrack to putting bricks through windows. Each track on here is a catchy and intelligent way of saying fuck you. The first 5 songs are flawless, the whole album is packed with a manic energy that will have the listener screaming along with Black Franics. Everytime I hear Bone Machine my heart starts racing, probably my favourite song ever. [First added to this chart: 02/22/2015]

Sonic Youth's first truely great album. It begins with one of the best three in a rows in music, the icy Tom Violence, the vivid dreamscape of Shadow Of Doubt and the anthemic Star Power. From here the album gets darker, Lee Ranaldo's story of a violent car crash on a highway is both abrasive and beautifully poetic. Death To Our Friends, is a wild instrumental that segways into the creepy Secert Girl, which sees Kim Gordon venting her thoughts, vaguely reminiscing and almost giving advice of a sort, all while a chilling piano repeats itself. This brings EVOL to its final pair of songs. Maryln Moore and Expressway To Your Skull, two epic torturous pieces that are played to you as you are chained to a cold stone wall. Thruston Moore is your condescending torturer, jumping from extremes and attacking you with dissonant guitars when you least expect it. EVOL is Sonic Youth at the bottom of well, dim, muddy and distant. [First added to this chart: 02/22/2015]

The Murder Mystey - My favourite Velvet Underground song, the guitar riff that opens the track energises me more than any other piece of music ever has. It makes me feel like I'm in a jet black valiant speeding down a highway at midnight, my head out of the window and the headlights peircing through the dark of the night, through the guard rail of the highway to reaveal an empty beach. Then suddenly everything slows down as I turn around to see Mo Tucker with her head out of her window singing to me. What a magical feeling. [First added to this chart: 03/30/2015]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.5/100, a mean average of 85.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.0.

A really interesting chart Jack, found quite a few albums from this list that I can now enjoy. Some interesting picks but overall well thought out. Loving the in-depth comments.

Got some good bands there but honestly everything seems far too mediocre to be considered as a "top" album chart

Thanks for taking the time, glad you enjoyed the comments. It's not that I have anything against the 80's, it just never did much for me as a decade overall. I just connect with less from the 80's than other decades, I don't really know why (even though so many 80's bands influences many of my favorites). Nice chart on your end too, would love to see it expand.

Funny you should mention Anthony, and yes swans was a recommendation from him. I've actually started to get into some of their 80s albums, but that may not be reflected by my chart anytime soon. Calling it predictable is right cause I'm tying to listen to every album in the top 1000, so I cleared out the top 100 first (so it should hopefully expand over the next couple of months). But I didn't hear about Benji from Anthony, VIMTV (velocities in music tv, Jake and Tom) recommended it to me. Lift Your... was actually an album I kept seeing on these charts, and I thought the title and cover were pretty interesting so I decided to give it a listen. Never watched Anthony's review before hearing it.

80 for now cus i always find the lower ends of 100 charts to prove the extent of effort put into the chart, but looking at the top 40 picks (even with the weird eels choice, gonna have to justify yourself to me) you're looking at a top score when you've racked up the points for a 100 limit. great to have someone else in the school actually listening to good stuff
