Top 40 Greatest Music Albums

((This is really old and out of date I have a chart on RYM now: https://rateyourmusic.com/list/hungrycolorsurroundingme/judge_me__my_favourite_albums_f1/
That said I'm going to keep this exactly how it as, so it can act as a time capsule of 14 year old taste in music))
1 album per artist, until I have a larger chart. I will continue adding descriptions to albums. Albums that illicit a strong emotional response will be written about first.

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.5/100, a mean average of 85.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 86.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 10.0.

A really interesting chart Jack, found quite a few albums from this list that I can now enjoy. Some interesting picks but overall well thought out. Loving the in-depth comments.
Got some good bands there but honestly everything seems far too mediocre to be considered as a "top" album chart
Thanks for taking the time, glad you enjoyed the comments. It's not that I have anything against the 80's, it just never did much for me as a decade overall. I just connect with less from the 80's than other decades, I don't really know why (even though so many 80's bands influences many of my favorites). Nice chart on your end too, would love to see it expand.
Yay for post-punk
The Raincoats is a lovely pick
Nice chart, can't wait to see more.
Great chart - a good mix of the classics and more unusual. I am looking forward to seeing where you go next with this!
Good Job! :)
Funny you should mention Anthony, and yes swans was a recommendation from him. I've actually started to get into some of their 80s albums, but that may not be reflected by my chart anytime soon. Calling it predictable is right cause I'm tying to listen to every album in the top 1000, so I cleared out the top 100 first (so it should hopefully expand over the next couple of months). But I didn't hear about Benji from Anthony, VIMTV (velocities in music tv, Jake and Tom) recommended it to me. Lift Your... was actually an album I kept seeing on these charts, and I thought the title and cover were pretty interesting so I decided to give it a listen. Never watched Anthony's review before hearing it.
80 for now cus i always find the lower ends of 100 charts to prove the extent of effort put into the chart, but looking at the top 40 picks (even with the weird eels choice, gonna have to justify yourself to me) you're looking at a top score when you've racked up the points for a 100 limit. great to have someone else in the school actually listening to good stuff
