No album better encompasses sadness, loss, despair, and bleak foreboding than JD's 1980 masterpiece released a few months after lead singer Curtis's suicide. After years and years, this is still the one I turn to in order to harness my feelings of things gone horribly wrong.

Always placed up high in best-of lists, there's a reason for it: Radiohead's 1997 album is their best work. As great as they are, they have never equalled it, never before or since, and its place in Rock history is cemented, both thematically and emotionally.

One can't say enough for the achievement and contribution this album made to the psyche of 1980s music. This band's anti-establishment lyrics and rowing-against-the-current style, proffered by its lead singer/songwriter Morrissey, cemented some of our most treasured memories of 80s music. This album, released in February 1984, encompasses some of their best known work.

This now largely-forgotten Scottish group put together a string of great albums during the 1980s and 1990s, making themselves the center of a genre called Dream Pop. This 1984 album is probably their best, as all elements of their core sound are on display from "Ivo" to "Donimo".

Ride stormed onto the scene with this 1990 album with it's famous cover art featuring blue water with a single wave. In a way, the cover stands for the guitar reverberation apparent on the album which forms their core sound. "Paralysed", "Dreams Burn Down", and especially "Vapour Trail" are highly memorable songs.

This 1981 album of theirs hooked me on what I suppose is called Gothic Rock. "Night Shift" is the album's crowning achievement, and it's great Halloween or Night music.

The Wikipedia entry for this album is remarkably minuscule for an album of such importance. One of the reason's it's forgotten is that by its 1983 release date, post-punk sound had largely waned. Nevertheless, the album may be the single greatest example of the genre.

Roxy Music went largely unheard here in the United States when they were together. It's a huge loss, I think, to American audiences. This 1974 album, along with 1982's "Avalon", for me encompasses the crux of Brian Ferry's best sound.
