Top 100 Music Albums of 2016 by babyBlueSedan
What's up 2016. 2015 was phenomenal but I have high hopes for you. Before we start here are my post-2014 year chart ground rules:
1. Everything I listen to this year will be listed here with a comment. Partially because I like keeping track of everything and partially because I think it's just as valuable to know why someone doesn't like something as why they do.
1a. My comments get really out of date because I don't update them. So they probably refer to a list order that is no longer accurate or just say "I need to give this another spin". Oh well.
2. I'll mention here how many albums are "keepers", meaning I plan on adding them to my collection. These are the albums that I think I'll still be listening to in 10 years.
3. Albums rated 70 or 65 that aren't keepers still come highly recommended. Typically these albums will have consistency issues or will have a sound I enjoy without doing much memorable with it.
33 keepers so far! This was a tremendous, deep year - keeping nearly 33% of albums I heard is well above average for me, at least I think so.
*Update 9/3/18: updated everything 70 or above, the rest who cares
*Update 2/19/20: I did it again

I much prefer ballad Nick Cave to rock Nick Cave; even my old favorite Cave album, Let Love In, is nearly ruined by tracks like Jangling Jack and Thirsty Dog. These songs are hardly ballads, but they are the type of slow meandering tracks that really suit Cave's deep brooding voice. Jesus Alone is the standout, but I love how the tracks at the end get less abrasive, and by Distant Sky and the title track it almost assumes a peaceful quality. How did I listen to so much bad music in 2016 but not this?
The Jet Fuel track is based around a really dumb conspiracy but pretty much every other lyric about men's attitude toward women is great. And the next track has a Twin Peaks reference that chills me to my bones so it makes up for the dumb 9/11 thing.
I like Since I Left You, but I also think it's a little overrated. Other than the title track (one of the best songs of the decade), Flight Tonight, and Frontier Psychiatrist there are really no standouts, and it's easy to zone out while listening to it. But it's a really inventive album that's also fun to listen to.
First impressions: I think Wildflower is better. The samples are a little more recognizable, which I enjoy, and it's much more summery. Since I Left You always felt like a fall/winter album with the whole "leaving you" thing, but this is a lot of fun to listen to and it feels much more effortless than a 16 years in the making album should feel.
And it's got some really great songs. Danny Brown makes Frankie Sinatra and The Wozard of Iz fantastic, Because I'm Me has a great feature, and The Noisy Eater is pretty funny. But the sneaky best track on here is If I Was a Folkstar, which has one of the most relaxing beats I've heard this year. [First added to this chart: 07/31/2016]
I like this now. Anything is possible.
Old review:
Have you ever really wanted to hate a band because of their name? I have. This one.
Which is why I was a little upset when the first track on this thing turned out to be awesome. It's a really great psych rocker with tons of energy. It's built around a simple riff that pretty much repeats and loops in much the same way during the verses and choruses. So here's the downside: the same description could accurately be applied to every song on here.
Nonagon Infinity is supposedly a concept album that loops forever. Meaning the tracks all transition smoothly together - even the last one into the first one! How neat! Thing is, is that really all that unique? Isn't that what Sgt Pepper was somewhat famous for (minus the first and last tracks)? Regardless of that, there are other albums where this is the case. Even fucking Death Cab for Cutie did it on Transatlanticism. It's a (maybe?) novel idea, but it adds absolutely nothing to the music.
In fact, it detracts I'd say. No songs on this album stand out. King Gizzard seem to have been way more into following this concept than writing anything memorable - this entire album could have been written in about 20 minutes. If this album had lyrics I don't remember them. It was great background music, but nothing I'll ever return to. [First added to this chart: 05/15/2016]
Reminds me a bit of Nick Cave, but without the creepy crooner vibe. The lyrics here are interesting but I don't like how it strays between punk and art rock without really finding a foothold.
However, To Think That I Once Loved You is one of my favorite songs of the year. No surprise since it's the most Nick Cave-sounding one. [First added to this chart: 04/16/2016]

that Aesop Rock album was great
I'm gonna go ahead and give this a 95 for now just while its in the "under construction" phase, but i really like how you give your charts context in the opening notes. makes for much better understanding. Thank you.
