I've focused on solely personal, lesser known albums for fun before, and I'll do it again, but I'm being more conventional this time.
Anyhow, my biases are still all over this chart. Rock over Pop. Punk over Prog. Classic Soul over modern R&B. + A small scattering of treasures that have been overlooked by the masses.

There were essentially 2 debut LPs released for Screamin Jay Hawkins in 1958 - This one on little Fontana records, and the widely released "At Home with Screamin Jay Hawkins" on Epic records. They share 4 tracks including the legendary "I Put A Spell On You". But, by God, this Fontana release is WAY BETTER. There are four tracks here which are quintessential Hawkins: Alligator Wine, Little Demon, There's Something Wrong With You, & Frenzy, which are omitted from the Epic version.
No one else sounds like/sings like Hawkins, with his moans, groans, and gutteral riffing. It's soul, but like the voodoo caskets he crawled out of on stage, it's from a part of the soul that Marvin Gaye et al. didn't dare venture into. [First added to this chart: 08/07/2020]
