Why is it that Clairo and Billie Eilish always release albums in the same year? Just an observation.
Anyway, seems like Claire didn't stop, and is back almost precisely three years later. I was hoping she would take further steps up, like how many steps Sling was above Immunity. I legit hate the lead single Sexy To Someone as it highlighted a kind of songwriting that for some reason gets on my nerves (little did I know, she does that on the majority of the tracks here), alongside the most generic indie soft pop instrumentation. One of her worst songs, also contradicting the potent statement she made in Blouse. The melody is so forced, unlike her not-hitting delivery, and the doubled vocals increase the irritation that I should feel something but don't.
When Charm starts, it's at least more polished and atmospheric in a vintage way with Nomad, mainly those guitars. On this song, unlike the majority of Sling, it's the artist that is the weak link and not the musicianship. However Nomad sounds like a straight-up masterpiece (or what every other person on the internet describe the album as) compared to the next few songs. Second Nature that couldn't be any less outstanding, take the record down significantly. That song was already out the other ear before it ended. Slow Dance also shows that the mixing job is poor, it's like neither any instrument (in this case piano and drums) nor Claire want to be in the forefront, and that decreases their confidence in performance. The 3-note piano line is okay, but the fact it's repeated throughout the entire song, is a failed attempt at soft rock songwriting; there is no subtlety. Claire also is usual good with one-liners that sticks, however she hasn't delivered one so far, nor written one that made it onto the album.
Thank You is more acceptable, because its rhythm lifts the vocals alongside the 2005-movie-core virtuoso, despite the amateurish piano playing and the confused pacing from Claire. The flute around the second half in the chorus is the most positive element, and the bridge was also pleasant. But again, Claire isn't saying NEthing remotely close to interesting material. Terrapin is the slow, jazz soft rock cut here, but it's the most diet version of said mood I've heard in a long time. Damn, it's infuriating how clueless and cliché this song is. She still hasn't said anything worth remembering.
Her vocals, finally seem a bit home on the more psychedelic creamy pop number Juna, mostly cause they seem to flow down the same stream of being a bit free-formed and therefore are easy to listen to without overthinking. The 'oohs' are the closest thing this whole record gets to anything melodiously compelling, viciously disappointing that it's the same girl that wrote Bags, one of 2019's catchiest tunes. The last segment of the song is filler though. It gets better on Add Up My Love, because Claire actually sings her lyrics in a much more rhythmically and lushly orchestrated way, whether she realizes/cares or not. Still, the best element in this song is the drums imo. This is what the awful Sexy To Someone should be. Keep in mind, this is just good, or above passable, nothing to write 5-star reviews over.
I understand what she was going for with Echo, but the combining '60s nausea-inducing synth and castigated guitar alongside her fluffy vocal-engineering is both ugly and nightmarish, pretty much accidentally (also what is that cut-out near the end, that was horrific). Ewwww, I hate this doggamn song, perhaps the worst song along with Sexy To Someone.
I realize that the album's almost over, and I don't remember how the passable songs were fully like and the others are out of my head. And that just continues on the penultimate Glory of The Snow, that generally just sounds like a parody of its surrounding songs. Here, drumming cannot even make the song sound listenable on any capacity, as it sucks. That flute is another thing that is pretty darn close to having grip, though the confused synth and Claire's almost monotonous delivery keeps it away.
Charm ends with Pier 4, the only song worth saving (thank Claire), as well as the only song with Claire's actual lyrical goodies. Probably cause it also harkens a bit back to her bedroom pop and guitar roots. That guitar melody is very recycled, which makes it difficult to stand out, but it's very atmospheric and amusing while listening. Claire is in her bag (no pun intended) with her somberness complimenting the stoned atmosphere.
"You'll strike your own matches to logs / May catch an eye while you play sad and soft" is perhaps the greatest lyric on Charm. Feels weird to have the best-by-a-land-slide track end this dreadful pop record, still better than none.
Besides Pier 4, again, there are no signs of any adequate lyricism on Charm. Something are interesting topically, but Claire couldn't play it any more safe and any less engaging than what she did. Vocally, this was a challenge to listen to: Claire has no good melodies, no emotional engagement, no captivating timing, and plenty of awkward spaces. She cannot spark a single syllable on the spectrum of good emotionality to save herself from mediocrity. And that is by far the most disappointing thing about Charm because she could use her quietness to her benefit on Sling, but these lively moods of instrumentation just expose all its shortcomings at their worst. I hate myself for being so harsh since she seems like the nicest person on Earth, but Pier 4, Nomad (Juna and Add Up My Love too on a good day) saves it from being a 1-star LP. This album would've been mildly enjoyable yet easily forgettable as a collection of instrumentals.
