The arrangements are understated and filled with just the right sounds to flesh-out the emotion and vibe of the songs. There are elements of chamber folk/pop, some art pop, lots of more general contemporary folk, and all these beautiful touches are nicely worked in and the whole album is quite beautiful and unified. By the end of the album I felt slightly more refreshed, slightly more whole and slightly more enriched. Its just a really gorgeous album. Don't have much else to say. Maybe once I've returned a few times to this my thoughts will be a bit more full and abundant. For now after 2 listens its just one of my fave albums of the year thus far. Really solid."  [+]  Reply

It's steeped in aesthetic suggestion of something dark, something sinister, something lying beneath the surface under the white lace. Alas and alack if there's in fact some deeper truth or horror or horror-truth hidden under there, Cain hasn't the faintest idea what it is. Strangers has a nice build and payoff, but almost everything else on the album is just cringe overproduced sanitised radio-pop. That is except for the triptych of songs beginning with Ptolemaea. Those three suggest something *is* actually happening deeper within this album at a narrative/thematic level. However, once you emerge from the piano instrumental Televangelism – waiting for something to hit – you just get Sun Bleached Flies, which is a garbage song that just pretends you went on some odd detour off the road and into the dark forest – "but don't worry, you're back on the 5 lane mega-freeway and the FM radio is crisp again, let's forget what just happened!" In reality the "weird songs" were just placed where they are because that's where you put the "weird songs" in an album nowadays. It's the pop formula tolerating a bit of contained experimentation, because the thought of that sells now. I hated American Teenager."  [+]  Reply

The beats sound fairly thin and rely on one loop samples a lot throughout this album. However, it does works well on “Dreamin Of The Past” “Scrape It Off” and “Rock N Roll” due to fantastic samples and great contributions from features. In the end, the production and Pusha do both conclude in great form as the last 4 tracks are very good, but it is too inconsistent to be put up there with Pushas best work. "  [+]  Reply
