"Definitely in my Top 5 albums of all time. The guitar music is great but the way it is brought across in broad Yorkshire accent and dialect is summet else. The way the stories are told in the lyrics is just how one of your mates would tell a story about one of his nights out."  Reply

It might suffer slightly from a slight same-y-ness, but it's still a great listen. In my mind, I had her placed with Lady Gaga for some reason, and I now know to listen to these musicians before internally labeling, as Winehouse was an enormous talent. It's nice to have an R & B album that's more throwback 70s style than the hip hop R&B that's so popular today. Good stuff!"  [+]  Reply

"Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word...""Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word) that it had the air of something new and important. It wasn't at all- it had the substance and danger of a Hot Topic halloween party with dime-store shrooms. So what actually made the shoulda-been-a-trainwreck it worthwhile? Well... it was actually a lot of fun. Reviving the grand 'ol concept album formula, glam-rock poses and arena-metal that probably shoulda died with the early 80s, it apes every Big Fucking Band of the era- Iron Maiden, Supertramp, T. Rex, Danzig/Misfits, and hell there's even the Tom Waits bastard stepson of "Mama" (yes, that's Liza Minelli singing backup) but none so more than the undisputed kings of extravagant excess and Everything's Gotta Be An Anthem skin of Queen. The opener The End basically seems like the begginings of Ziggy Stardust and The Wall ran into each other, become one unholy monster walking away with blurred vision and a bloody nose. There's no way this album should've worked, but miraculously it did. Mainly cause it does mix solid songwriting with a sorta adorable sense of over-the-top surface grandeur that makes it a really entertaining spectacle, if rarely a substantive one. Not as strange or groundbreaking as it wanted to be, it nonetheless came across as a strong new millenium arena-rock album in spite of it's conspicious flaws. I may never enjoy it as much as I did when... I WAS..... A YOUNG BOYYYYYY!!!, but it's still fun to come back to once and again. "  [+]  Reply

Donuts is so much more than just a beat tape, it's the final swan-song of a dying man who felt that in his final moments he had to push himself into making something worth being remembered by. 29 out of the 31 tracks were recorded from a hospital bed in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with nothing but an Boss SP-303 small 45 record player his friends had brought him as a gift, Dilla was undergoing treatment for TPP and lupus, records that his mother would bring him were used as the sources of the sampling for the album. It's a common complaint that all of the songs here are too short and fleeting, but to me it's perfect. It's sort of hauntingly symbolic of how life itself is too short and fleeting, but personal meaning aside, every song here is so lush and beautiful, tiny little details are spread across all 31 tracks, it's impossible to listen to them and not hear something new. I wish they could go on forever. I really do. I am not worthy of listening to this. I can't even believe this thing exists. I listen to this and I think about how terrifying death is, how scared Dilla must have been. there are no words to describe how breathtaking this music is. fuck. RIP."  [+]  Reply

"The more I listen, the more magnificent it becomes. 75/100 is unbelievably low for this record. The Pot, Vicarious, Right in Two, and Jambi are all instant classic Tool songs. But what makes this album great is the duo of Wings Part 1 and 2. I'm a firm believer that 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) is ...""The more I listen, the more magnificent it becomes. 75/100 is unbelievably low for this record. The Pot, Vicarious, Right in Two, and Jambi are all instant classic Tool songs. But what makes this album great is the duo of Wings Part 1 and 2. I'm a firm believer that 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2) is one of the greatest songs ever written. The more I learn about it and the lyrical content, the more I listen closely to the ethereal nature, the layering, the harmonies, the more I'm absolutely blown away. It's scary how good that song is, so deep and so beautiful. Overall the 2nd half doesn't hold up to the impeccable 1st half, but as a whole it's great. "  [+]  Reply

It may not have some of the big and timeless hits as their other albums did and Dani California was played WAY too much on the radio, but I cannot find a bad song on this album.
