Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 84.5/100, a mean average of 83.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 84.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.3.

The contrarians will tell you that this is the band's true masterpiece. And sure, it's a very good record. Albini's production was a great fit for the band. But better than Nevermind? I think that's a stretch. In Utero is a shot of good whiskey, but Nevermind is a perfect cocktail.

The rawness of this album really brings it home for me. It’s like we’re peering into Kurt Cobain’s soul. You can literally hear the room. Steve Albini really captured what Nirvana was about on this one. This album is Kurt’s masterpiece if you ask me. Top tier melodic songwriting mixed with punk rock and hardcore influence. Their best form. A nearly flawless album in my book.

I hope Kurt will forgive me on that one, but I think In Utero is clearly Nirvana's least good album. It sounds like a sterilized version of Nevermind (Given that it's exactly the same format as Nevermind, 12 tracks ending on each side with a slower song). To be honest only "Dumb", "Pennyroyal tea" and "Radio friendly unit shifter" are still moving me today... maybe "Serve the servant", but the rest is sadly average by Nirvana standards.

Although as a whole I prefer Nevermind for its consistency, that my favorite Nirvana songs Dumb and especially All Apologies are here.

A solid Nirvana album that has some of their greatest ever songs on here including one of the best album closers of all time. All Apologies makes this record feel like such a rewarding listen as its beauty at the close of the album is just mesmerising for me. This song has dragged me back to this record countless times alongside its counterparts in terms of quality which is Dumb, Rape Me and Heart-Shaped Box. There are a few deep cuts on here that don't get the praise they deserve as well making this well worth a listen just to discover these songs. Cobain is fantastic on here also with his lyrics being some of the most important of the 90's. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable Nirvana album that has all the elements that make the group so easy to love.

Better than Nevermind and Kurt and Nirvana went on top of their game by releasing what I consider to be their Opus Magnum.

Kurt hated just how commercially successful Nevermind was and tried to deter the new fans that were making them so adored by releasing In Utero. They failed, this album went harder than before but cemented their place amongst the rock greats with a record that stands as one of the defining parts of what makes Kurt so brilliant.

Shows Nirvana genuinly evolving away from the confiness of Nevermind. If Nirvana had a masterpiece this is it.
