More direct and incisive than its previous albums, "GREY Area" combines modernity groove and tradition soul, which gives a hip hop which sees jazz influences vibrate on rhythmic jerks on which the words are of all splendors. The only problem is the length of the album, it is a little short. The musical ambiances built with samples from seventies productions, offer a timeless color that makes the "GREY Area" a classic future of the genre, hoping that this time the public will not miss the raw talent of one of the most brilliant MC's of these last years. For me, this album is one of the best UK Grime albums I have ever listened to.   9/10 Best track: "Boss""  [+]  Reply

Its simple guitar-driven approach matched with Harriet Wheeler's distinctively sweet voice were a great rebuttal to the overproduced garbage of late 80's glam metal, rap and pop (the same could be said of music now, perhaps more so). The album achieved some measure of buzz at the time, mostly due to the amazing singles "Here's Where the Story Ends" and "You're Not the Only One I Know". Both are true gems with catchy guitar hooks, smart lyrics and of course Harriet. The former however sounds conspicuously like The Smiths "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side". In fact, The Sundays sound a whole lot like The Smiths in general. The guitars are clearly Marr-inspired. The bass and drums are well played and willingly take a back seat to the guitar and dominating vocals much like Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce did. Harriet could well be Brit Pop's female answer to Morrissey with her literate lyrics and smooth & unique though somewhat overbearing voice. I love the way both vocalists sound but there are people who find both incredibly annoying over time since they are so unique and often overwhelm the music to such a complete extent. Still I want to give this album its due. It is excellent and there are few if any weak tracks. Aside from those mentioned above, "I Won", "I Kicked a Boy" and "Joy" are standouts. You may only know the band from their cover of The Stones "Wild Horses" that was used in a commercial."  [+]  Reply

For that reason I don't anticipate critics to really go crazy over this. It's not a huge departure from the sounds from Currents, in some places it sounds like he used the same synth settings as some tracks from Currents, but he does bring in even more new sounds and mixing techniques into, whether it's woodwinds or congas or miscellaneous percussive sounds or just using his voice in wild ways (which is hardly new for him). That said, Kevin Parker is as talented at production/arrangement/mixing as anyone out there. Hendrix had the guitar and KP has Ableton. He's an artist that just doesn't release anything that isn't meticulously crafted and detailed. He's not going to convert fans on this one like he did on Currents and similarly if you're a stoned hippie longing for the days of innerspeaker and lonerism dunga dunga throwback 60's sound you might want to look elsewhere. That said, I think it is better than currents, songs like Posthumous Fogiveness and One More Hour showcase him returning to the more lengthy adventurous song structures from Lonerism and Currents didn't have a ton of that outside of Let it Happen (which I still think is more long than it is really complex albeit still being a fantastic song) and it has some of his best most diverse sounding production and catchy pop hooks on it as well. Move along, there's really nothing to see here. Just an all-time great padding his stats with another quality piece of art."  [+]  Reply
