The Waterboys have gone far from their glory days 30 years ago. Their modern sound is a mix of weird contemporary country-soul and folk rock. Good Luck, Seeker is a very incoherent album, experimenting with sounds and not quite knowing what it want to be. While The Soul Singer proves to be a perfectly fine single, other songs on the album leave lot to be desired; Low Down In The Broom tries to mimic Bob Dylan, Dennis Hopper is a misplaced dance-rock track and The Golden Works is an electro-rock track that makes my ears bleed.
The lack of a coherent style is the biggest problem of this album. It goes in too many directions at once, making it difficult to fully enjoy. Other than the singles, the strongest songs are those closer to the band’s typical styles of distinct rhythms and spoken verses (such as My Wandering In The Weary Land), but even they lack the usual soul and energy. The happier songs, such as the aforementioned The Soul Singer and Why Should I Love You? also stand out.
