A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The first couple pages are just way to similar to the overall list for my liking, making me feel smothered in the Beatles and Radiohead. But right about when Get Happy!! (my favorite Costello album and in my top 25) shows up things take a very nice turn. Major props for the Church's Heyday, Ride and Pornography as well.
