The best band ever, and it's not just my opinion either. Uncorrupted, uncompromising, and always so innovative, SY is a band that showed, in the righteous possible manner, what it means to write good music, to live it, and to live FOR it. Since early, mercilessly uncommunicative, pearls such as Bad Moon Rising to the latter tenderness exhibitions like A Thousand Leaves, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley and Kim Gordon have built an untouchable pantheon of sound that, as always when it comes to the Great Ones, does not consent to an easy classification.

Washing Machine is perhaps their best and most consistent album, a fusion of welcoming musical accessibility and the necessity to completely avoid conventions when it comes to writing radio-friendly pop songs. It also remains one of the bravest and most introvert sound recordings, a terrifying relict of the past, but, at the same time, a promising warning for the future. Once I finally see at least one SY graphite in Banja Luka, a place in which, just in the last twelve months, 500 new coffee-shops and 300 perfume stores have been opened, I will get rid of the bitter notion that I live in the most disgusting provincial area, that (and that's why it is the worst indeed!) desperately tries to belaud itself with the gloss of "urbanity". But perhaps I am the one with a problem...
Also see: Goo (1990). Underrated just because it was issued for a big record company. Stupidity is, like, infectious...

There was a time I found my love for Bad Moon Rising inexcusable. How could have I liked this obscurity more than SY's acclaimed classics such as Daydream Nation and Sister? Something must be wrong with me, I thought to myself. I also never liked The Beatles. Don't see how it's connected but there you go. A little bit later, I discovered Piero Scaruffi's site and realized it was OK not to like The Fab Four, no matter what the British press might say. Oh, and I could have finally come out and say it: Bad Moon Rising just might be SY's best...

The band has obviously expanded on the sound of their influences (see below). Bad Moon Rising basically equals "noise" plus "minimalism" and continues in the vein of their debut album. And once again, I touch upon the problem of "accessibility". It takes courage to listen and comprehend demanding music. SY's early work is as dark and challenging as it gets, in its devastating proclamations such as "Society Is a Hole" and "Death Valley '69". No doubt they would do it in a more "acceptable" manner in a few years, but their primal strength and the definition of their whole "politics" is crystallized on this here classic. Underrated but still a gem.
