Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 77.3/100, a mean average of 73.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.7/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 12.3.

Saison33, if you like MJ better, fine. However, calling VU and the Clash irrelevant just makes you sound, well, stupid. You don't have to go beyond this site to see that both bands are extremely relevant-- their albums are in more critics and user charts, and ranked higher, than MJ's. 'Round these parts, VU and the Clash are more popular. In response to your other comment, did you ever think about the fact that VU and Clash weren't trying to touch the world, that they never tried to be what MJ was? They were not about making music with universal appeal. You may as well criticize Beethoven for not having dope 808s dumpin' in the track. That's obviously not what he was about. And calling them one-dimensional makes it sound like you haven't actually listened to their music. MJs music was actually way less complex than VU and the Clash, and that's the very reason why it appealed to 8-year-old kids and screaming teenage girls. MJ is harmless dance-pop with the occasional bland hallmark card sentiment ballad hear and there. There aren't many dimensions to music. That's fine if you enjoy it for what it is. Just don't spread absolute lies about other bands.

What I do like about your chart is that it highlights black music and the thing people tend to overlook when discussing popular music is that all of it is more or less related to jazz, blues, soul, rock'n'roll or Jamaican music.

But speaking of that, where's Miles and Trane and Mingus ?

MJ...the "king of pop." I would agree with that title, he stands alone in pop culture, with his popularity, his moves...Anyway, while I admit I enjoy occasionally listening to Thriller, I just don't feel that his pop music has the same depth as an album such as the Velvet Underground and Nico, London Calling, etc. When you really listen to an album like that, you can just tell that its genius beyond compare. I simply feel that there are enough better albums out there to fill up my chart without MJ. I do see why some people love him, though.
