Top 60 Greatest Music Albums
by viktorretoft

This is probably more of a personal favorites list, but anyway you put it, it's always pretty hard to be objective on music, but this fine collection of albums are the best I have listened to by far. I am only 16 years old, and grew up in the 2000's, some that's why I have alot of newer stuff, because that stuff is exactly what there touches my generation, and ofcourse I love those records too.

This album changed my life, it has been awe inspiring in it's existential themes, it touches themes that no other musician would even dare to poke to. Overall the album have this gloomy mood. You feel Ian's soul through the music. The music is cold, but yet in some way it surrounds you, and stays inside you.
Though it captures all these things it has this eccentric hypnotic nerve of punk, it takes you to another time, it takes you to a small club in Macclesfield, and it makes you stay there till the final track runs out.
First time I listened to this LP, I thought it was some really boring and mechanic music with a dead guy singing, but after watching the film Control, I thought: why not listen to it one more time, just ONE. I did and from there on it stayed close to my heart and has had countless plays on my stereo and I-pod. For a beautiful summerday or a sad winternight.

I borrowed this album from the libary and I remember listening to it the first time. Shine On You Crazy Diamond, was just like a guitar-gasm with such a beautiful text, then the 2nd track came on, Welcome To Machine, and it feld really alienating and far away, with the urban-sounds in the start and all. Then Have A Cigar came, and I just thought: This track has sucha power. The start of the song I didn't really like, but when coming further into the song, it just raised up and up, to a plateau of controlled power I hadn't witnessed in a long time. When I came to Wish You Were Here I cried, a little tear ran down from my cheak, I had never cried to a track before(maybe to Bon Iver some time), Wish You Were Here is one of the best tracks ever made, so powerful and emotional. The only thing there drags the album down is the 12 minute album-ender Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 2, which draged toooo long. [First added to this chart: 12/09/2011]

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 84.8/100, a mean average of 84.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 84.5/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.8.

Wow, you must have listened to a staggering amount of music in your 16 years to come up with a chart with this diversity. There's older albums here that I've never got round to listening to in 37 years (Bowie's Low for example.)
I do like Joy Division but I have the Heart & Soul boxset so it's difficult to seperate into individual albums mentally. I've always preferred New Order, I grew up with my brother playing Substance a lot and it always stuck with me.
