Top 100 Music Albums of 2017 by babyBlueSedan
Alright, 2017. As always, here are the rules for my post-2013 year charts:
1. Everything I listen to this year will be added here, regardless of whether it's amazing or awful. If I listen to over 100 albums I'll throw out some albums I didn't have much of an opinion on (not necessarily the lowest rated ones).
2. Every album will have a comment. Comments early in the year will be longer and well thought out, and as the year goes on they'll get lazier and some of them will just say "good". It's inevitable.
3. Anything with a final rating of 70 or higher will be added to my collection. I'll list the number of "keepers" in this description. Anything with a 65 comes recommended but in the end was too inconsistent or bland for me. 60s are meh and anything under that I wouldn't really recommend.
33 keepers so far this year.

Never been a huge fan of the band, outside of Souvlaki, and I don't get this one at all. [First added to this chart: 07/15/2017]
I wasn't sure why I wasn't really enjoying this until about halfway through when I read a review comparing Sampha to James Blake and I realized why. Directionless instrumentals with a voice that's just trying to hard to add extra flourishes to the music.
Probably deserves a lower score but I'd like to avoid listening to it again. [First added to this chart: 03/24/2017]
Writing about this album feels a little weird to me, as does listening to it - being that close to a person's grief feel dirty, like you're not supposed to be witnessing it. And it feels weird assigning a rating to it, but it is a piece of music so I guess I have to.
Part of the weirdness comes from the fact that Phil Elverum hardly treats this as a work of music either; on the first track he says about death: "it's not for singing about, it's not for making into art". But as music has been a part of his life for what I'm guessing is a long time, making music must have what felt right at the time he made this. It's clear that he did his best to put his thoughts down in way that would make a great album, as there are some very touching parts on this album. Unfortunately, they're vastly outnumbered by the parts that are boring or just plain unlistenable.
Let's start with the good: Ravens. That's really about it, and I'll do my best to explain why. Ravens is a great song musically - it has a nice structure with the kind of semi-chorus where he switches up the tempo. And lyrically it's pretty touching. In an almost Mark Kozelek fashion he talks about the time before and after his wife died. My favorite part is "now I can only see you on the fridge in lifeless pictures...and in every dream I have at night", which is just a heartbreaking thing to think about. And throughout the song there are a lot of touching things like this.
But I didn't compare the song to Kozelek just because it's pretty stream of consciousness - it also goes a little too far into specifics at times. Like opening with "in October 2015", which makes it feel more like a diary entry than a song. And unfortunately, much of the rest of the album feels like this - touching thoughts that feel contorted and compressed to fit into music. Take my favorite lyrics on the album, which made stop and put my sad-listening to depressing lyrics in perspective:
"Conceptual emptiness was fun to talk about before I knew my way around these hospitals"
Damn, what a great line. But when he sings it, it sounds really forced and doesn't pack nearly the punch that reading it does. And that's the case for a lot of these lyrics, that is, when they're not just outright hard to listen to. Like hearing how cancer made his wife "jaundiced and fucked". As much as I like me a depressing album, there are things that venture into territory too personal for me. Given the circumstances, it's a nice album. But not something I could ever want to listen to regularly. [First added to this chart: 07/15/2017]
I don't think I'm very flat so I don't know what to think. Lololol dad jokes. Anyway after their last album I wasn't too keen to give this a listen but I was looking for more 2017 albums to listen to and I found this. Musically it's not a lot different - there are some good melodies but overall it's a little too simplistic to really make an impact. Also there are a few slow songs in a row that really drag by; emo can be really successful with slow, drawn out songs but instrumentally there's not really anything happening in these ones. And lyrically I couldn't connect either. The main themes are the singer reflecting on the death of a few friends, which should hit me hard but doesn't. My main problem is his reflections come down to "I spend a lot of time alone now", which isn't super insightful. I mean, last year Touche Amore sang about not being about to listen to songs about mothers after your mom dies, which was a super heartbreaking thing. The fact that people are gone after they die doesn't hit me quite the same way. [First added to this chart: 07/13/2017]
If you had told me at the start of the year that I would hear 4 King Gizzard albums by year's end, I would have thought they were my new favorite band. But actually I only listened to this one so that I could say I heard all four. For a "garage rock" band this one is a little slow and takes forever to finally do something interesting. [First added to this chart: 12/10/2017]
People talked about how this was different because of acoustic guitars and spoken word parts. They are there, but they really don't blend with the black metal parts well at all. [First added to this chart: 09/30/2017]
This was underwhelming. [First added to this chart: 12/03/2017]
I really want to like this guy but his songs just go nowhere. They seem to stop out of nowhere. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2017]
What's this? A Lorde album AND a Haim album I don't care about? Wow, this is making me nostalgic for 2013! Arcade Fire even released an underwhelming album.
On a more serious note the bottom of my chart is littered with albums by female artists and it makes me feel really sexist. If you've got recommendations for 2017 by female artists that you'd think I'd like hit me up. Otherwise Alvvays and that Courtney Barnett collab will hopefully buck the trend. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2017]
When Thundercat indulges his funky side I enjoy him, but he doesn't really do that on this album. The whole thing just kind of floats by, leaving you feeling drunk (so at least the title is appropriate). But it's not a "buzzed and out on the town" drunk. It's a "I had a few drinks at home and now I'm too tired to get off the couch" drunk. [First added to this chart: 08/30/2017]
