How can an album be so sad yet so much fun at the same time? Great traditional inspired music, meaningful lyrics, and passionate vocals. 30 years I've been loving this album for now and I'm still not sick of it. And The Band Played Waltzing Mathilda, written by a Scot, from the first person viewpoint of an Australian, sung by an Irishman, is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard that has brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions.
10/10 songs: And the Band Played Waltzing Mathilda, The Old Main Drag, Dirty Old Town, and The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn

"I am slowing down
As the years go by
I am sinking
So I trick myself
Like everybody else"

I am not sure what this album would be like hearing it now for the first time but this was one of the first albums I ever owned. I am sure I got it after hearing In Between Days but before Close To Me. I had the cassette with the lyrics and I learnt every word to every song.

"Does 'fuck you' sound simple enough?"

I was in my late teens and had heard a bit of Sonic Youth but when I first Teenage Riot, and then Daydream Nation, they blew my mind.

"Me and my girlfriend
Don't wear no shoes
Her nose is painted pepper
Sunlight...
She loves me
I mean it's serious
As serious can be..."

It was the late 90's, we were just two young summer loving, grungey hippies in love, having a barefoot wedding in the middle of summer on a 38°C (100°F) day. 20 years later and it's still serious. Summertime Rolls was one of our jams. This whole album was one we really related to, and listened to it a lot those couple of summers and many more after.

10/10 songs: Jane Says (right up there in my favourite songs of all time ), Summertime Rolls, Mountain Song, & Ted, Just Admit It...

"You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own"

Like a fun drunk night. You have party songs (Fiesta, Turkish Song of the Damned), singalongs (Fairytale of New York, Medley), dancing jigs (metropolis), stories (Bottle of Smoke, Sit Down By The Fire), a time to be serious (Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham Six) nostalgia (Thousands are Sailing) and the end of the night (If I Should Fall From The Grace Of God) which starts the album.

"What we want and what we need
Has been confused been confused"

One of the first albums I ever bought (my memory's timeline is a unreliable - I have about ten albums that might have been first) and the start of my R.E.M. becoming one of my favourite bands.

10/10 tracks: The Finest Worksong, The One I Love, and It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) but I love every song!

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 17% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 87.3/100, a mean average of 88.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 88.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 9.3.
