Pop Rock, Psychedelic Pop, Classic Rock

THE BEATLES ! THE BEATLES ! THE BEATLES ! Some consider them as the best band in all history and other as an overrated band. What's certain is that "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is THE greatest masterpiece of pop rock. Even if you do not like all the tracks you have to admit that this album is one of the most important in the history of Psychedelic Rock, pop art and music in general. The first time I heard it, I was fascinated by the electronic sounds of the album. This album is one of the first concept album in history and is absolutely revolutionary: The Beatles are experimenting with new sounds and totally changing their musical approach. I am not the biggest fan and specialist of the Beatles but I sincerely think that this album is their most important production. He's better than "Revolver", than "Abbey Road" and "The White Album", sure. All the instruments are perfect and the voice of John Lennon is sublime. With the historical context, I think this album is the best of all time.

Jazz

Jazz is surely the most important musical genre of the 20th century. And the album "Kind Of Blue" is by far the best jazz album of all time. Even if you do not like jazz, you have to love this incomparable masterpiece. The album is probably one of the coolest album of all time (still today, while this album at over 50 years old). Miles Davis conveys emotions through this record such as melancholy, romance, joy ... This album is also revolutionary for jazz, it is the inventor of modal jazz and the New Age movement. Miles Davis is actually an artist who touches me. This is my favorite musician: these melodies are so beautiful. He is a really important artist. I think this album is the greatest musical emotion of all my life. I even learned all the pieces of the record at the piano so much I'm a fan. I recommend this classic to 10000%.

Experimental Rock, Art Rock

Radiohead is one of the most amazing bands and one of my favorite bands, that's for sure. It is true that "OK Computer" is the best album of the group, it is the most revolutionary and the most classic, but, I do not know why, I prefer "Kid A". For me, this album is one of the best examples of band evolutions. Radiohead has managed to release an excellent album completely different after the undisputed masterpiece "OK Computer" ... The band has reinvented itself using more electronic and experimental sounds. "Kid A" is Radiohead's most interesting album. It is impossible to get tired of this album, all the songs have an extraordinary universe. I'm a big fan.

Hip-Hop

I'm a hip-hop fan since I was little. During my adolescence, I only listened to rap. For me, hip-hop has always been one of the most important genres of contemporary music. I did not know 80s hip-hop because I was not born but since the mid-90's I've been listening to rap ... When I was a kid, Nas A's "Illmatic" was for me a revelation. It is surely the album of rap that I listened the most. The prod are excellent, the flow of Nas is violent and great. The lyrics are hardcore and conscious of New York. This album is one of the first to have made me love real music ... Surely my favorite Hip-Hop album of all time.

Progressive Rock

Pink Floyd is one of the bands that has brought the most to music ... They are pillars of Progressive Rock, space rock and blues rock. This inescapable group is the author of many musical masterpieces such as "Animal", "Wish You Were Here" or "The Dark Side Of The Moon" (For me, "The Wall" is not an excellent album). But the best of all these albums is "Wish You Were Here". This album is much more ambitious and successful than "The Dark Side Of The Moon", which is a bit overrated. The album is amazing, although it was recorded in difficult conditions for the band, Pink Floyd has managed to do even better than on the previous album, "The Dark Side Of The Moon". The melodies are perfect, the solos of Gilmour are magical and the experimental sounds are really revolutionary for the time. I love this album !!! All the songs are beautiful, this album is one of the greatest classics of all time. Very good job of Pink Floyd !

Alternative Rock

Pixies is one of my favorite bands, this band has inspired many other great bands such as Nirvana, Daughters and even Hip-Hop crew like De La Soul. Their best album is by far "Doolittle", all by itself this album is a best-of of the band. The fifteen titles are masterpieces. For me, it remains the best album of alternative rock and noise rock. This album has not aged, it is always great between violence and cool attitude, beetween "Debaser" and "Gouge Away", Pixies have managed to create a timeless classic. Frank Black is one of the greatest genius of rock ... "Doolittle" is the perfect rock album, a classics composed only of hits that will never be forgotten.

Folk Rock, Singer-Songwriter

Bob Dylan is my favorite singer: his voice is perfect, his lyrics are very very well written and he has the sense of music and melodies. Dylan is really one of the solo artists that really marked me like Miles Davis, David Bowie, Lou Reed ... Dylan is a folk artist and for his 2nd album he decided not to be alone with his guitar but to be accompanied by other instruments. This gave "Highway 61 Revisited", an album that exploded the folk and revolutionized Rock. Indeed, since this album, Dylan really has the Rock'n'Roll spirit. This album consists of multiple standart pop music from the 60s. This album is really great, it's really hard not like it.

Art Rock, Experimental Rock

The Velvet Underground is probably my favorite band. Lou Reed is a genius who has released a multitude of cult albums in band or in solo. I'm really a fan of this American band that has been able to mix sweet songs, punk songs and polemic songs. The banana album was produced by Andy Warhol. Warhol is one of the greatest genius of contemporary art, including inventing pop-art. As the producer of the album, Warhol imposes the voice of German singer and model Nico on 3 tracks. The wonderful voice of Nico is very interesting when it's accompanied by the instrumental underground of The Velvet. The album contains a lot of polemical songs: there are songs about drugs and SM. This album was not successful at the time but it is today one of the greatest classic of Art-Rock.

Alternative Metal

Rage Against The Machine is the band that struck me the most. During my childhood, I only listened to rap, but one day I discovered RATM. This band that mixed rock and rap made me discover the whole rock universe. Like many, I discovered them from the very beginning. This album is for me the very definition of a perfect album. It's genius! all titles are musical masterpieces between virtuosity, rage and power.Tom Morello is my favorite guitarist: he is really creative and virtuoso, these solo are great. RATM have succeeded in renewing rock by creating a unique and recognizable sound among a thousand. The rebel message is excellent and is very intelligent in my opinion. The tracks are all more cult one than the other (Do not despise any), this album is one of the most cult and striking in the history of music. I would not be the same if this album did not exist...

Hip-Hop

Wu-Tang Clan is my favorite hip-hop crew. The crew is composed of the best rappers in the universe: RZA "The Scientist", GZA "The Genius", Ol 'Dirty Bastard "The Specialist", Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Method Man, U-God, Masta Killa and the great , the god of hip-hop: Ghosteface Killah. "Enter The Wu-Tang" is one of the hottest album I have ever heard. It's never heard, brothel! The world of rap It is fucked in a hardcore gangbang by 9 members of Wu-Tang. The atmosphere is sticky, roomy and dark. The productions of RZA are excellent, mixed and sampled to perfection, the beats are serious and marshy. This album is the greatest classic of modern hip-hop and RZA and its accolythes are the greatest god of rap and music in general...

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 91.6/100, a mean average of 94.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 94.0/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.9.

We have similar tastes. really like the variety...great chart.
I am surprised that everyone still appreciate the "velvet underground and nico" album.. That came out when I was in 7th grade..so great. never gets old. Came out during the 'summer of love' with 'are you experienced" (may 31st), "sgt pepper"(june 1st) and "surrealistic pillow". amazing
summer for music. and then there was all of the singles being released on AM radio..every day was something new. I can't explain it..I was lucky to have been a kid then.

This strikes me as a very well thought out objective Greatest Albums chart. You have found 3 albums outside the top 500 on this site and all of those three are inside the top 1000. Do you have some less acclaimed favourites that you believe warrant being in the company of some of these classics? I reckon music appreciation is largely a subjective experience. The objective stuff is important in assessing the best of the best, of course, but surely you have more outliers beyond the top 500 that warrant a call out.

Nonetheless I agree with many of your choices. It’s good to see you have an appreciation for the Icelandic beauty of Sigur Ros and Björk amongst the acclaimed classics.
