Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

I like Hazards of Love and Fleet Foxes in your top 40. They didn't make mine but are very close. Some other nice choices as well!

A little too much beatles and pink floyd for my taste. But i love that you have got the decemberists and neutral milk hotel in there!
Good chart, but would be much better with a little diversity.

Very Solid list, you included Wish you Were Here above Dark side of the Moon and Nevermind & London Calling made the top 10 which i consider excellent choices. I dont like Green Day on the top ten, the music overall in American Idiot is one of the best pieces that have been out in years but I HATE ARMSTRONG'S VOICE!!.
