Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

After hearing both several times over the years, I can't see how anyone would think Older is better than Listen Without Prejudice. But at least we agree they're both better than Faith. And I enjoyed that the 80's is your number 1 decade. Usually it's the least favorite decade for people's all-time album charts. So points for uniqueness. Now I guess I'll have to go listen to Spandau Ballet's Parade and hope I like it better than True.

I appreciate where you are coming from. Glad to see the Australian artists included and some of my own lesser known favourites get into your chart - Spandau Ballet, Simple Minds, Wallflowers, Cowboy Junkies, Tracy Chapman.

Definitely a personal list with a very interesting mixture of genres and styles. It's lists like this one that makes this site so worthwhile.

More pop than my own list but I don’t think this reflects how much I like the music on your list. I enjoy most of it. Nice to see Disintegration so high. I am curious to check out the Tori Amos album you said is underrated, and finally, John Grant’s inclusion-respect!
