Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. First of all, I'd like to take a moment to express how much I appreciate this chart for including Cold Roses, an album that's meant a lot to me and that I've ranked #1 for the 2000s on my own chart. Such a fantastic and underrated collection of rock songs. So, good on your for recognizing how good that one is. Beyond that, there's a lot to admire here, particularly Sound of Silver, Illinois, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, and Chutes Too Narrow. A really well thought out list--great job putting this together!
