Opener, so you want to be a rock'n'roll star, is a sardonic take on the music business featuring trumpet from Hugh Masekela, and it's followed by, have you seen her face, one of Chris Hillman's best byrd songs. Elsewhere, there's hints of, sweetheart at the rodeo, on the countryfied, time between, and, the girl with no name, and, everybody's been burned, is a great David Crosby track. Unfortunately, another Crosby number, mind gardens, is atrocious, an awful attempt at something unconventional, it's the only moment on the LP that stops it from being a total classic. A pity, because everything else here is great, from the brilliant, thoughts and words, and an excellent Dylan cover in, my back pages. All in all, a very good album, just tarnished by a moment of indulgence from Crosby. "  [+]  Reply

Many say, and I agree to a certain extent, that this was an attempt to match 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band' by The Beatles. There may have been some self-inflicted peer pressure to do something psychedelic but I don't see 'Sgt Pepper' as that psychedelic, apart from a few exceptions. This album is more in the realms of 'We Love You', The Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields Forever', 'All You Need is Love' and generally early Pink Floyd and The Incredible String Band. What this album doesn't share, is the characters of Ray Davies, Syd Barrett, early Bowie and The Beatles' 'Mr Kite'. Instead we have a full immersion into trippy and exoctic instrumentation and songs set in a dreamworld. This album could only have been released in 1967. Is it any good? Does it deserve the bad press it got? I think the decades have been kind on this album and it is generally well received now and features in most YouTuber's top tens. I love this album. Being born in 1970, I could not hear it on release, I first heard it when I was 15 and it was a total surprise. There was no internet to warn me of what to expect. It's got a hazy, druggy vibe but the songs are a mix of excellent pop and 60's rock with eastern and psycadelic touches. We have the beautiful 'She's a Rainbow', the spacy '2000 Light Years From Home', the country tinged but poppy '2000 Man', the music hall pastiche of 'On With the Show' and the rest is fairly psycadelic. Some excellent moments with the latter but a stinker with the over long 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens)'. An artefact of it's time but thoroughly enjoyable generally. In a highly original way Procol Harum succeeded in combining raw rhythm'n blues with classical music. With Keith Reid's dark mysterious lyrics and Brooker's soulful voice these 1967 recordings sound as attractive and relevant as ever. Their sound is quite unique, and it's hard to mistake these early Procol Harum recordings from any other band's output. Some versions contain all tracks from both the American 11 tracks version and the European 10 tracks release. Actually several tracklistings of the album were released, but the the most important difference was whether they contained "Homburg" or "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Some versions also miss "Good Captain Clack". Other bonus-tracks are the B-side to "A Whiter Shade of Pale", ""Lime Street Blues", a great R&B track. Early versions of songs later to appear on their second album "Shine on Brightly" have also been included. All great and highly interesting. The original version "Magdalene" has only survived from an acetate, so the sound obviously is not as good as could hoped for. Otherwise all tracks sound great. It's very hard to bring forward tracks from the original album, as they all in different ways are of the highest quality. Obviously their to early hit-singles stand out, but in the same vein you'll find outstanding songs like "Salad Days" and "Repent Walpurgis". The bluesier side of the band is shown on tracks like "Something Following Me" and "Cerdes", but even these two have the classical "PH" feel to them. Among the up-beat tracks "Conquistador" and "Kaleidoscope" are the closest you get straight-forward rock-music. "Mabel" and "Good Captain Clack" are Procol Harum at their most unceremonious.
