It's pretty clear to me now he was the genius behind Solange's hit (and one of the best songs from last year) "Don't Touch My Hair"
This thing has an ample amount of Sampha's signature production style along with cowbell-like sounds, innovative bass lines, and unique voice. I hear some influence from the producers on To Pimp a Butterfly as well as FKA Twigs on his dense-production heavy songs but he has a style all his own even if he occasionally appeals to some in-vogue trends from contemporary pbr&b, hip hop, and trap (as well as art-rock).
His piano driven ballads while not groundbreaking are likable, and reminiscent of John Legend with a hint of Bon Iver.
As of Feb 2017 this is the best album and miles ahead all the mediocrity hogging the top spots on this site. Hopefully it will get it's due as more reviews come in!"[+]Reply

I keep going back to it for that reason, and it scratches that rock itch more than a lot of other albums. I'm surprised at how much I'm revisiting it, but it gets better with every listen."[+]Reply

On first listen, I was a bit turned off by how heavyhanded the references were in the album to older Pink Floyd songs, and I also wasn't in the mood for Roger's politics. My opinion started to change when I saw Roger's Us + Them show in Houston this past week. About five or six songs into his set, he launched into a small block of songs from this new album. Instantly, a solid quarter of the audience got up to get drinks and use the restroom. I was absolutely appalled by this. Yeah, I get that people are here to hear the classics and that these songs are inevitably not going to be up to par to those old albums, but this was obviously a work that Mr. Waters put a lot of heart and soul into, and I found the audience's behavior to be grossly disrespectful of a brilliant artist. This made me listen to the songs more intently, and to my pleasant surprise, I dug them quite a bit. Yes, Deja Vu sounds like Wish You Were Here, and the whole album starts with the same kind of heartbeat sound collage as Dark Side, but it's important to note that Mr. Waters is simply looking back at his youth and playing to his strengths. This album isn't supposed to supersede his previous works. No, it's more of an epic epiloque, a summary of everything that came before as he molds his old sounds to today's world. I thought that the Division Bell was a good way to cap Pink Floyd's catalog, with the Endless River just acting as an unnecessarily long and boring coda to the band's career. That's why, in a way, I hope this is Mr. Waters' last record. If it is, he sure will have gone out in style. "[+]Reply

I still don't know whether it's as good as, Yellow house, or, Veckatamist, but it's certainly different. Sounding less rustic and more polished than ever, Painted ruins, is a slow burner that has still yet to hit me completely. A totally intriguing album and still potentially their best record. Not yet though. "[+]Reply

Side 1 (the first 5 songs) is Spoon at their best, 5 incredible tracks, well-produced and catchy as ever. Side 2 (the 5 last songs) covers new grounds for Spoon and is more experimental. First, there's "Can I Sit Next To You" that could have been a Maroon 5 song, but Spoon manages to make it great with their clever producing. Then, there's "I Ain't The One" that sounds like a post-grunge song, but the use of the electric piano instead of the guitar is pure genius and make this song really enjoyable. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. "Shotgun" sounds a little bit like "I Was Made For Loving You" by Kiss, but once again, Spoon can make any song sound great and they do it here. The last one, "Us", is a great example of how Spoon are in experimental mode here.
All in all, I still like Side 1 better, with the straight-up Spoon doin' it like as well as ever, but I really appreciate Side 2 too and the effort by the band to go elsewhere. A really solid album by a band that makes nothing but great albums.

God that cover is fantastic, I could just stare at that piece of art for hours, or maybe a couple minutes."[+]Reply

The neo-New Wave sound is absolutely stellar; you can pick out the hints of bands like Blondie and The Cars all over the place, but its freshened up with modern production and classic Paramore instrumentation.
The songs themselves are well written, fun and snappy. Hayley Williams' voice is, once again, the centre of attention, and you can't deny how good she sounds. She really carries the album if anything, though she's certainly conveyed with the help of the tight drum work of Zac Farro (especially on Hard Times and Rose Coloured Boy) and the solid guitar melodies that fill in the rest of the blanks.
It's fairly consistent, though there's no denying that most of the quality is towards the start of the album. Still, they make room to expand their style with slower paced tracks like Fake Happy and Idle Worship. None of it is particularly stand out, but it's all very nice to listen to, and there certainly isn't a bad track on here.
The result then is something delivers far more than any other Paramore album, particular the lead single Hard Times. The rest of the album plays well and doesn't disappoint, and if the band continue with this sound, I will certainly be back for more. If this is what new-wave revival sounds like, sign me right up."[+]Reply
