Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Very different but not realistic and lacks in diversity. Jazzmatazz is awesome but c'mon... You get a higher rating once you open your mind a bit.

Excellent chart! I love a number of your entries, especially Nevermind, Let Love In, OK Computer, and Buena Vista Social Club. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is a terrific top ten pick--such an enjoyable listen even 20 years after its initial release.

Nice chart.
Songs for Drella is a masterful collaboration between Reed and Cale (but not at all VU)
Have a lot of Nick Cave but not Murder Ballads - must check this out.
Also I have a lovely album by Stina Nordenstam, but not the one on your list.
