I owe Bob Dylan and The Byrds a huuuge thank you for influencing the sound on "Rubber Soul". Obviously, the songwriting is great, but it's the atmosphere inspired by the folk-rock movement that makes this album magical. "Nowhere Man" has one of the simplest guitar solos, but only shows how overrated technical ability is when it comes to music. The first Beatles album where I pretty much love every song.

Suddenly The Beatles are not half the rock band they used to be. What's happening? They're softening up! John confesses he needs help and Paul longs for yesterday. The tempo has lowered and Ringo is providing other things than danceable beats only. As one song suggests, it's time for The Beatles to hide their love away and go in new directions lyrically (as well as musically). One could argue that it's a minor "Rubber Soul" with songs nearly as strong and a sound very much influenced by the folk rock movement, only The Beatles weren't confident enough (or ready) to release a full album of original compositions and skip the old commercial trick with a blasting rocker at the end (though admittedly John does give it full throttle with his vocal performance).

Still not quite there yet, but it's getting very close. The lyrical side of the album still revolves around the old youthful themes, but the production and orchestration are nearly as pompous and impressive as "Pet Sounds". Only one album left with minor experimentations before Brian Wilson really pulled himself together!

You'll feel a whole lot better if you listen to this, The Byrds' debut. Most notable about the album is the chiming guitars that heavily influenced the sound on The Beatles' ”Rubber Soul”, particularly "The Bells of Rhymney" which George Harrison used as template for his ”If I Needed Someone”. In addition, the album brings The Byrds' adorable euphoric version of Dylan's ”Mr. Tambourine Man”. Innocent, youthful and nostalgic, it just doesn't get any more charming than this!

The warmup album to "Pet Sounds". Compared to the two surrounding albums, it's quite uneven, but it also tries out a couple of ideas that any fully realized Beach Boys album never would've bothered trying (the first of these being the album title's use of double exclamation mark). Check out "I'm Bugged at My Ol' Man", a song far from being great, but quite comic. Then there's "Girl Don't Tell Me", Brian Wilson's take on a Beatles song, and "Summer Means New Love", a production and arrangement experiment, quite possibly the prototype of either "Pet Sounds" (the title-track of "Pet Sounds") or "Let's Go Away for Awhile". Finally, you get the single version of "Help Me, Rhonda", a slightly different version from "Today!" which means no playful fade-in fade-out outro and an added "h" in the name "Rhonda"!

Bobby-boy! So much has been said about this man, possibly more than the individual Beatles members. So much I want to say about him! Well, his lyrics, I guess they're great, but I've never been blown away by them. However, I must admit that the famous lines "How does it feel to be own your own, with no direction home, like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone" are absolutely classic, lyrically as well as musically. "Highway 61" is possibly his most interesting album musically and it has a great "revolutionary" feel to it.

Turn! Turn! Turn! To the sound of The Byrds. The times are a-changing for the band who since the debut have included even folkier songs and added more hypnotic bass lines to others while still maintaining the jangly trademark Byrds sound. The last album before The Byrds turned psychedelic.
