Yeah I realise this chart is incredibly repetitive, but it's also honest.
There are also a lot of fairly obvious picks, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Beatles etc, however there is also a decent amount of slightly less known and interesting picks to be had

Often criticsed for the fact it is a double album, as people feel one album with select songs left out would have preferable. Definitely not the reality. The first side is clearly stronger, with perhaps only the title track coming close to a weak song. The second side has some songs that could be considered weak (perhaps Readymade, Storm in a Teacup) but if you're a fan, like myself, these songs are also great and belong with the bunch. This is the peak of Keidis as a lyricist, the man who once talked of partying on pussies, now speaks of love and where we come from. John Frusciante is once again floorless, his efforts to use every effect under the sun make for a colourful listening experience and every lick and riff is one that makes guitarist want to learn them. His backing vocals are also mesmerising (see particularly Slow Cheetah and Hey). Flea is as usual exceptional and redifines bass guitar (see particularly the outro of Charlie). Chad Smith shows his solidity and flair, and also demonstrates how to start the writing process with a drum beat (Stadium Arcadium). All round perfection.

Some call this the slightly lame Chili album, which I personally think is ludicrous. Sure, it is much more softly spoken than some of the previous works, the guitars are less distorted, the bass is much less punchy and the lyrics are no longer so overtly sexual and generally I would argue a bit better. There are of course funky numbers on here, like the immovable Can't Stop, but generally the atmosphere is one of calm. Frusciante is the absolute star of this album, Flea and Chad are solid throughout and in terms of lyrics these are some Keidis' best up to this point. The only downside to this album are the songs Don't Forget Me and Venice Queen. They are brilliant songs, but having heard the live versions, particularly La Cigale and Slane Castle, the studios seem rather lackluster in comparison. Best songs: Dosed, Can't Stop and I Could Die For You (the chords are incredible).

This is the album that truly showed what the Chili's would one day become. Certainly it is not as good as later albums, there is too much distortion, the lyrics are not quite there yet, and it lacks the backing vocals that made albums like 'By the Way' so perfect. However, there is still a lot to love in the childish humour, obvious talent on display and raw feel to it. The cover of Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground' naturally takes the plaudits, but other highlights include the opener 'Good Time Boys', the anti drug anthem 'Knock Me Down' and the frankly pleasant 'Pretty Little Ditty'.

Now this is more like it for a Frusciante-less RHCP. There are many highs and lows I feel on this album. The highs including The Longest Waves, Sick Love and The Getaway being the highs, and Detroit, Hunter and Tis Condergea (or whatever) being the lows. The key difference between this and I'm With You is Josh. Josh is on this album playing with absolute confidence in what he is doing, his guitar is now at the front of the mix and he is starting to give a more Frusciante/Hendrix type sound, which is a vast improvement on his reductionist approach of the previous album.

This another album that everyone loves to slag off, and I completely understand, if I weren't a massive Peppers fan, I wouldn't have thought much of it either. The first album without Frusciante was always going to disappoint and annoy and in places it does fail. No longer is the guitarist the driving force behind the band and it is over to Flea and Anthony to take the reigns. There are ballads to be had in Police Station and Brendan's Death Song. The album offers funky bass riffs in Factory of Faith and Rain Dance Maggie. The lyrics are generally decent, particularly in Meet Me at the Corner and Police Station. However, there are some dud songs in there too, like Dance, Dance, Dance and Happiness Loves Company. Overall, a very decent effort from a band who had just lost (arguably) one of the greatest songwriters and guitarists of all time. Best tracks: Monarchy of Roses, Police Station, Meet Me at the Corner.
