Underrated Chicago indie MC Serengeti teams up with producer Kenny Segal to revive Geti's longtime character Kenny Dennis. Segal's been on an incredible run, working on recent indie hip hop masterpieces Hiding Places (Billy Woods) and Purple Moonlight Pages (R.A.P. Ferreira), and Ajai deserves similar recognition for Serengeti's dig into sneaker and designer clothes culture. [First added to this chart: 05/11/2020]

A witty, often humorous, anti-folk style condemnation of the current state of America and the orange blob in charge. [First added to this chart: 06/25/2020]

The enigmatic duo of Ron & Russell Mael released their debut record in 1971. Here we are five decades into their run and they're somehow still making music that sounds exciting. While they've evolved from idiosyncratic rock origins into a more electronic aesthetic, Sparks remains a wryly humorous duo of oddballs. The well ran dry for the vast majority of their peers decades ago, and yet Ron & Russell really haven't lost any of that eccentricity that made them charming during their peak years in the 70s and 80s. Who would have guessed that of all the bands from the late 60s/early 70s, Sparks would be the one that continues to make great music into the 2020s. [First added to this chart: 06/25/2020]

Daniel Knox is the dark comedy equivalent of a songwriter. His moody piano ballads generally come carrying a twisted sense of humor. Earlier this year, he covered songs from Twin Peaks. This time he’s back with a much different set of covers. When sung Fred Rogers, by these tunes were earnest ballads to comfort children. When handled by Knox, there’s an oddly darker tone despite not losing the sentiment of the lyrics. [First added to this chart: 07/10/2020]

In the 90s and 2000s, Flaming Lips had a truly exceptional run of albums that placed the band in realm of critical success and popularity few bands will ever know. In the past decade, they've seemed lost, with their best work (The Terror and Embryonic) existing in a dark, dense claustrophobia that wasn't exactly gonna please fans of their more surrealist pop sound of the past. The collaborative tribute records were fun but not as exciting as a great Flaming Lips set of originals. Following up last year's much overlooked King's Mouth: Music and Song, American Head is a triumphant return to form for the Lips. It's loaded with the magical exploratory yearning that made Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and The Soft Bulletin so stunning, while refusing to cheaply attempt to recreate those records. Recorded prior to last year's All Mirrors but not released until now, Whole New Mess presents the same tracks in a more intimate context than the string-accompanied versions released a year ago. The stripped down presentations are more achingly melancholy than their more hopeful, stunning counterparts. Where All Mirrors was an album that pushed Olsen into new territory, this is more in line with the her early records Strange Cacti and Halfway Home, which some fans like myself may actually prefer. To say that the latest album by Torres is aptly named would be an understatement. From the opening lines of “Good Scare” to the end of the album closing title track, Silver Tongue is an indie pop record loaded with great inspired lyrics that cut deep into the core of human connection. As someone who was never totally in love with her other records, this one has really won me over in a big way. [First added to this chart: 02/02/2020]

I'm just diving into Bandcamp this year. #1 source. I've heard some duds for sure, but it's been rewarding. I'm finding a lot of publications being overly negative and a little boring as of late and I'm not sure why... straying away from them for the time being. The slate for the spring looks crazy packed too, I'm sure you won't have any problems finding yourself buried underneath an unending queue.
