This is arguably the most impactful first listen I've had. Having heard about this album being a daunting work, I figured it would take several listens to really connect with. To my surprise my first listen was full of moments where I simply sat in awe of the excellence of this piece. This is an absolute masterpiece with nuances I still continue to unpack.

This is, I think, the gold standard of fun, energetic, yet soulful and supremely beautiful performance. While each musician delivers so much above and beyond, I think Krall's piano melodies and harmonies stand out more than anything. Oh how I wish my own playing was as liberated as some of these phrases.

My introduction to Swans. I'll forever be amazed at how perfectly Swans' artistic vision was realized in this album. This record set me on a journey through Swans' discography with smaller tangents into Gira's other projects.

Two things really get me about this piece. 1) The instrumentation is a flawless capture of Pink Floyd's vision. 2) Nothing on this record feels dated.

Kitchen life is a monster. This one hits me right in the feels. It's a summation of some of the greatest highs and lows I've experienced yet. Not that this music has much to do with cooking beyond my own association. Even the first few seconds take me back to nights getting slammed for bruscetta, campionatore, pizza dough, and grapefruit sorbet. It takes me back to the alcoholics and drug addicts that I got so unbelievably attached to. The withdrawing coworker that still somehow had my back and still managed to tell the most vile jokes. Back to the chaotic spirals of kitchen politics. So what is this music to me? It's the scratched aluminum counter tops, the grime in the grout on that orange tile floor, the taste of anchovies and fontina, the defeated shell-of-man feeling, the this-is-everything hug from someone as sweaty as myself. Will, this one's for you.

Undoubtedly my favorite Radiohead album. I feel RH had the best balance to their sound around this time. And what's more, I think these delicate lyrics floating atop the instrumentation makes this their best. And although, the Basement recordings are good too, I was actually tempted to list Scotch Mist here, the relative obscurity making it all the better.

Nick Drake is a sacred artist. Never to be played at an inappropriate moment. But I get to play this fairly often for people.
My most memorable listen for this album occurred one evening at a vegan farm in France. My Swiss friend and I were doing some dishes after a day of gardening, animal care, and swimming in the nearby river. I looked over at her while Place to Be was playing and was struck by an intense sense of beauty. I'm hesitant to play this album too casually now in case it should lose its magic.
Another favorite memory came as myself and another good friend sat on a hill in the desert looking across a vast landscape. Marred with black desert varnish, the red rocks in the sunset seemed like another planet. Beautiful, and oh so worthy of listening to Pink Moon. [First added to this chart: 05/01/2023]

This was an early addition to my collection; nevertheless it is always an easy album to return to. It's also so great to have music that I don't seem to outgrow. Many times I've felt that way about an artist or album, but not Rumours.
I consider this work incomplete without Silver Springs. I think I need this song to really bring the album closure. [First added to this chart: 04/12/2020]

I don't often hear people rave about this record, although I can't see why. Here are three musicians creating some incredibly tight jazz. The emotions in the studio can be felt even without knowing the specifics of what was actually happening. I find this work incredibly expressive and impressive, and despite a sea of jazz teeming with immaculate artists, this one will always be at the top for me.

Both albums from BCNR are phenomenal, though I think "Ants" is the more complex album thematically, perhaps more than almost anything else on this list. This album still seems covered in some sort of mystery for me, and it keeps me coming back, often realizing there's another layer of this album I still haven't digested yet.

Love to see Money Jungle that high, I wouldn't say it's an underrated album, but it's not always mentioned in the same breath as Miles, Coltrane, Duke and Mingus classics, and it should be. Also you're probably the first person I've seen outside of r/deathgrips that has Steroids as their best work. Cool chart all around, very fun to browse and there's some stuff that I'm yet to hear.
