Probably the most amazing concert of all time. The dead at their psychedelic peak making true magic on the spot. The dark star is truly trasportive and the playing in the band explores some crazy territory. A truly incredible journey and exercise in improvisation.

I normally cringe at greatest hits albums on lists like these and here I have one at number three on my list. PAC is one of a kind though. The most important rapper in history and this record is unparalleled. He is more a singles artist anyway and this album has songs not available on any other record. Including my favorite song of all time changes.

Like nothing else ever released. It’s not exactly music but it’s an artistic soundscape. A sonic marvel. I hated this the first two times I tried to listen to it but then on three it started to click and now I think it’s pure genius after many many listenings. This isn’t for everyone but if your tastes in albums run eccentric this just might be for you.

One of those records that you knew was going to be a classic the day it was released. Introduced the world to Calvin broadhaus aka snoop dogg. G funk at its absolute finest.

This is the peak of 80s pop magic. Prince was a true visionary and this is his magnum opus.

Play you just found out your mother died and Eddie Hazel wails an amazing powerful guitar solo that’s possibly the best ever put on wax. George Clinton and his band of funk legends make one of the 70s most important and powerful records.

I love hot guitar playing and Zappa may honestly be the best guitarist not named Allman or Hendrix. This record is fantastic. With a great cameo from Don van vliet.

For some dirty subject matter this album sounds beautiful. Reed and Cale make a damn near perfect record that if you don’t listen to closely to the lyrics you’d never suspect it was the velvet underground.

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this chart.
It lacks notes that would be useful to explain things well, and also lacks any really outstanding and/or unusual surprises. Nevertheless, it offers a reasonable perspective on the history of “popular” music, and quite a good variety of artists.
