VARIOUS PRODUCERS
So, what's so impressive about 3 discs worth of Bob Dylan castoffs that didn't make it to the original albums? We can start with the fact that this set is better than the entire careers of most artists. That what we've seen from the stunningly prolific Dylan is, based on the fact that The Bootleg Series is now up to double digit volumes, is more than just an amazing body of work. And that Dylan left much of his better work on the studio floor, particularly into the 1980's.
This box set contains a stunning amount of music, and does right by running chronologically from 1961 through 1991. Many of the songs were covered by other artists while these versions lay in cheap bootlegs or unheard. A few are alternate versions of famous songs, others are new to the listener. In all, this is a great journey, a series that never gets old. A fine addition to any Dylan collection that stands on its own. [First added to this chart: 02/21/2025]

Rather than do a single disc for his Greatest Hits Vol II edition, Dylan and Columbia opted for a two record set. The results are mixed, but high on the positive side. Not all of the songs are "hits", but there is a full side four of previously unreleased material, mostly songs re-recorded from The Basement Tapes. There's also "Watching The River Flow", a previously unreleased track that opens disc one.
Overall, the choices are interesting (and at times baffling), but the set is mostly very good...even though it can be a bit long. The cover photo is from The Concert For Bangladesh, showing Dylan looking at George Harrison, who was standing right next to him. [First added to this chart: 01/15/2025]

The Essential series from Columbia Records has had a few gems: the Bruce Springsteen edition, for example, is a very well thought out collection. The Essential Bob Dylan is almost in that category. As a hits compilation, it serves quite nicely. As in introduction to the career of Dylan, it’s pretty much perfect. Covering the time from “Blowin’ In The Wind” from 1963 to his contribution to the Wonder Boys soundtrack (Things Have Changed) fom 1999, this covers not all of them, but certainly the most important bases. The obvious songs are here, and it’s great to have them in one place.
The best part of this compilation is the surprise tracks. “Hurricane” from Desire is a great addition. “Quinn The Eskimo”, “Silvio”, and “Maggie’s Farm” are unexpected surprises. Having everything run chronologically is a plus as well. And for a career as long and full of great moments as Dylan's, putting it down to only two discs can be daunting: Columbia got it about as right as anyone could. This is a fine collection.
