Unlike Sebadoh's scattershot early albums, Bakesale is one of the era's best at bridging these two strains of nineties indie rock, the tracks blending together into a memorable whole. While Lou Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and company probably weren't explicitly trying to make a statement--the very notion of the concept album ran counter to the aesthetic within which they were working at the time--by tightening up and aiming for clarity, I think they managed one anyway. These songs feel like unpretentious, urgent, self-reproaching explosions of heartbreak, perhaps best exemplified by the brooding "Not Too Amused": "Don't make me your captive / I don't feel like talking your shit / I nod my broken head / I'm not too amused with humans." "Hammer Horror... I have no idea what she is saying in the song but I am enchanted nonetheless. And that chorus... her voice is wonderful, spooky and otherworldly all at once. I suppose you could figure out I consider this album to be saving the best until last. But what do we have before then? An album as strong as The Kick Inside, that's what! Well one lacking a Wuthering Heights but never mind. Symphony in Blue is a wistful recollection of time to gone and pretty song too. Don't read too deep into those lyrics though if you want to keep it from being dark. But you know what? Behind all this light hearted nightingale and hit parade songs this is a dark album. In Search of Peter Pan and the man who couldn't grow up, Wow and it's tale of failed delusional actors and Fullhouse is only a glimpse into the nightmarish hallucinations of a schizophrenic. Do you expect these topics from Kate Bush!? Well... sort of... yes actually. You know, this album reminds me of one by another band who I like. Manic Street Preachers Gold Against The Soul to be precise. Both second albums and thought to have fallen prey to the commercial second album curse (I don't know). Both contain harrowing lyrics though and are anything but commercial. In fact, 8 out of 10 songs on this album are great."  [+]  Reply

Get the album, skip that track. Other than that though, this is a great album. The A-side is ok, the best track there being 'Summer Highland Falls', some may think of it as a pretentious song, but it's also a very good one. Side A also features the nice 'New York State of Mind' and the great 'Say Goodbye to Hollywood'. Along with the song that shall not be named, of course. The B-side of this album, however, is absolutely fantastic. The weakest song on this side is the beautiful 'James' and the other 3 tracks are some of Joel's all time best. 'Angry Young Man' is a perfect pop track, 'I've Loved These Days' is a great nostalgia trip and 'Miami 2017' (Though not prophetic) is his best ever rock song."  [+]  Reply
