It is very tough to follow an album as good as Ten is and you can see they struggled a little to figure out which way they wanted to take the music. Once the record gets started though we are kicked right into a storm with 2 extremely energetic tracks which are possibly my favourite on the record. This really gives us an idea of what the rest of the album is going to be like and they follow this pattern, to a varying degree of success, on the rest of the tracks. It can be a bit up and down in spells but when the group get going they really create some powerful and enjoyable songs. Songs like Daughter and Rearviewmirror are prime examples of this and are very catchy. It does drag on a little too long for me however and it is let down by some filler cuts. Overall, this flies a little under the radar of some listeners due to the quality of Ten even though it deserves a lot of praise and is a very strong follow up. "  [+]  Reply

Songs like "Werewolf" and "Valentine" are subtle melodies with lyrics that gets under your skin, while tracks such as "Jonathan", "Left Alone", and "Regret" perfectly capture Fiona's fluttering state of mind. "Every Single Night" is a perfect opener that draws you in with the verses, then slaps you across the face with the chorus. The peppy "Anything We Want" is the only happy song on the album, acting as a nice relief to the distress. The closer "Hot Knife" starts with a simple timpani rhythm, then builds layer upon layer of vocals that speak conflicting thought about whether Fiona is above the man she loves or if he's above her. The entire album almost feels like you're inside her head, hearing her tortured thoughts as she barely manages to hold onto her sanity during a break-up. It's a modern classic."  [+]  Reply

Over years of weekly listening, I've found that once you move past Beck's own story about the creation...""Maybe "Sea Change" connected with me at the perfect time or not, but this is one of the best albums about loss, helplessness, and trying to move on, but being not truly able to move forward yet. Over years of weekly listening, I've found that once you move past Beck's own story about the creation of this album, it has many pieces that are applicable to thew struggle of Depression day in and day out. Musically, this record is top notch: Nigel Godrich's production really brought out some great ideas from Beck, his father, and the band. From the Shepard Scale in "Lonesome Tears" and intricate guitar weave on "Already Dead" to the lush swell on "Little One", this is an album that demands repeated listening to understand the scope of thought that went into each piece and how they fit into the overall scheme of the album. The synth textures and space noises on "Golden Age" can sound like a car accelerating off into the night and the deadpan vocals are forlorn and depleted just like the narrator would be in that situation. There's an aching honesty that permeates the record until you feel swallowed up into the dark atmosphere. Maybe that is why I think "Little One" is so effectively placed. No matter the listener, start with "Golden Age", it's Beck's greatest song."  [+]  Reply

"Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word...""Yeah this album was inescapable sometime around '06-'07, and it's not hard to see why. In a time when so many bands were taking the previously more direct routes of emotive popish-y-punk songs, this album was so self-consciously grandstanding and BOMBASTIC (do you want me to repeat that last word) that it had the air of something new and important. It wasn't at all- it had the substance and danger of a Hot Topic halloween party with dime-store shrooms. So what actually made the shoulda-been-a-trainwreck it worthwhile? Well... it was actually a lot of fun. Reviving the grand 'ol concept album formula, glam-rock poses and arena-metal that probably shoulda died with the early 80s, it apes every Big Fucking Band of the era- Iron Maiden, Supertramp, T. Rex, Danzig/Misfits, and hell there's even the Tom Waits bastard stepson of "Mama" (yes, that's Liza Minelli singing backup) but none so more than the undisputed kings of extravagant excess and Everything's Gotta Be An Anthem skin of Queen. The opener The End basically seems like the begginings of Ziggy Stardust and The Wall ran into each other, become one unholy monster walking away with blurred vision and a bloody nose. There's no way this album should've worked, but miraculously it did. Mainly cause it does mix solid songwriting with a sorta adorable sense of over-the-top surface grandeur that makes it a really entertaining spectacle, if rarely a substantive one. Not as strange or groundbreaking as it wanted to be, it nonetheless came across as a strong new millenium arena-rock album in spite of it's conspicious flaws. I may never enjoy it as much as I did when... I WAS..... A YOUNG BOYYYYYY!!!, but it's still fun to come back to once and again. "  [+]  Reply

The rest of the album up until the penultimate track varies from good to great, and said penultimate track ‘Pull Up the Roots’ is another amazing one and the closer ‘This Must Be the Place’ is one of my favourite songs and is one of the best album closers of the 80s. This album is one that I loved from the first listen, and I have found myself sticking it on more often than any of the other TH/David Byrne albums that I own."  [+]  Reply
