Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 2% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 78.2/100, a mean average of 77.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.8.

Like others I like the album but feel it doesn't reach the same heights of previous records - and like others that isn't to say it is a bad album, just that it just feels it is a bit on a slide from a very high standard.

It's good, but it's just hard for me to really like it since I've never really been in the right headspace to get what's going on here. I can completely see how this album could be a favorite for so many, but it just doesn't click for me :/

A good record but certainly not in the same class as the first three albums. Shady lane, is a Pavement classic, and there are some of the good tracks too, but, brighten the corners, doesn't quite have that freshness and edge that their earlier releases had. Still, it is Pavement, just not their best.

For me each album Pavement released was a little bit of a drop in standard from the one that preceded it. That's not to say this isn't still a very good album it just suffers in my eyes in comparison to it's older siblings. The songwriting is still quality, the lyrics still hit the mark but with each album Pavement got a little closer to being a 'normal' indie rock band rather than the glorious chaotic musical magicians they were. On the plus side Spiral Stairs offers up his best Pavement songs in Passat Dreams and Date with Ikea.

Fantastic guitar music with lots of ideas! Date With IKEA was the one I loved. Although that might be being biased because I love shopping at Ikea.
