Alt-J (often identified by the symbol ∆), is a band that was formed at Leeds University in 2007. Their name suggests something of a more electronic nature, and their sound does as well…but this group is more rock in nature than that. It’s also more everything else. An Awesome Wave is their debut album, released after the members had left school. You’ll find lots of different elements to keep you happy here…plenty of guitar, along with some nice hip hop beats. Great sounding keyboards, and intriguing vocals to go along with a great set of lyrics. Alt-J shows that right out of the gate, they were not afraid to put it all out there on their sleeves and be just who they are. And it works magnificently. An Awesome Wave is a breathtaking work. Sonically, musically, lyrically, this is an album that has something for everyone, and it’s all done extremely well.
“Breezeblocks”, “Matilda”, “Tesselate” and “Handmade” are the best tracks here, but everything else is worthwhile as well. Joe Newman’s vocals seem strange at times, but his voice fits perfectly. An Awesome Wave takes chance after chance, and succeeds time after time with beautiful results. This album grooves, rocks, and moves you with seemingly little effort. It’s a fine and underrated work, and deserves more attention than it receives. Rock is dead? As of 2012 and An Awesome Wave, I don’t think so…it’s just not the rock your parents understood. Their second album, 2014’s This Is All Yours, fared even better, and while there isn’t anything on the horizon so far, expect more good things from Alt-J (they did release a live album from Red Rocks in 2016). A band worth checking out, and worth looking to the future for. [First added to this chart: 12/11/2016]

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)
This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 79.5/100, a mean average of 74.2/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 74.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 20.4.

i feel like there could be a bigger approach to today's electronic music tho
What's here is really good--particularly Southeastern and An Awesome Wave. I look forward to seeing this chart fully developed and fleshed out, as I'm sure there will be plenty of real gems here.
adele's on it.... whatever
Great but short chart!
I haven't heard it
I have heard plenty of music from 2013. I reserve the right to not rate or rank it until I've heard it enough to be able to make an informed judgement. I don't feel the need to rush every album I've heard one time onto a chart. 2013 will be there when I feel like getting to it. And when I do get to it, I will have listened to the albums I decide to rate several times over...not just once on a crappy youtube upload.
