It’s kind of surprising that The War On Drugs isn’t a bigger band than they are…and yet, it also makes perfect sense. Led by Adam Granduciel, this Philadelphia band put out two of the very best albums of the 2010’s. But they tend to be forgotten, as they take their sweet time between releases: since their inception in 2005, they have only five discs out. The two that are the important ones are A Deeper Understanding from 2017, and its predecessor, 2014’s Lost In The Dream. Considered by many to be the greatest album of that year, it’s rare in that it’s a throwback to earlier music without copying other styles. The songwriting is strong, the sound is widely considered good enough for an extended road trip, and it’s a smart and satisfying overall experience that works on many levels.
But that all depends on where your expectations lie. If you don’t want to hear a band from 2014 channeling, say, Dire Straits, then this may not be for you. As well, Granduciel evokes the ghosts of younger Dylan and Springsteen, which can be polarizing as well. But it’s also pretty great to know that those artists are not yet forgotten or taken for granted. Yes, some of the songs are longer than you might be used to, but when those songs are as fine as “An Ocean In Between The Waves” and “Under The Pressure”, all can be forgiven. Any flaws that can be found with Lost In The Dream are buried by the simple fact that this is a damn great set of songs. The War On Drugs may not be the household names they should be, but this album is a must have. [First added to this chart: 09/17/2018]

Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

What's here is really good--particularly Southeastern and An Awesome Wave. I look forward to seeing this chart fully developed and fleshed out, as I'm sure there will be plenty of real gems here.

I have heard plenty of music from 2013. I reserve the right to not rate or rank it until I've heard it enough to be able to make an informed judgement. I don't feel the need to rush every album I've heard one time onto a chart. 2013 will be there when I feel like getting to it. And when I do get to it, I will have listened to the albums I decide to rate several times over...not just once on a crappy youtube upload.
