Tough to choose among the Fabs' albums but, as a reviewer said about it at the time of its release: "it's all there if you listen". Eclectic to the point of schizophrenia, it's a Himalayas of songwriting, an embarrassment of riches...

Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. This website was made for people like you David. My guess is you've been carrying this chart around in your head for many years. Feels weel contemplated, after the top 10 I have to admit I was thinking this was gonna be another Rolling Stonesque chart in thrall to the 60's and 70's but you've obviously continued to listen to contemporary music and despite leaning towards the 60's and 70's it feels well balanced. Your comments are very concise but get your thoughts across well (I especially liked the Nick Cave one). A finely crafted chart indeed.

@hairymarx1: We obviously don't have the same values regarding music ("Yoshimi..." the Lips' weakest work? Is that a joke?). As far as the Beatles' innovations are concerned, I won't go through that endless list again; hundreds of books have been published on the subject: read them or, better still, listen to the music IN ITS CONTEXT, and maybe you'll see or hear the light. Nuff said.

why not all of them indeed?there are super albums released on a regular basis (2008 has been an excellent year so far,with new ones by Portishead,Nick Cave,Goldfrapp,Raconteurs,...and even Ringo Starr!).A top 20 being very restrictive to me (where would I place Pérotin or Holst for instance?),I stuck to those timeless classics that are part of my DNA.My top 5 happens to be all-Beatles.So what?

Solid selections - great classics. It goes deep into an era that clearly is important to music history, yet misses quite a bit of other great eras. Yet, you like what you like, and that's great. Look forward to the top 200 if you haven't done it already.

I really like your chart. Amazing to choose 100 different album artists and still come up with such a cohesive and fun list! Despite your one-per rule, we've listed many of the same albums.
